Farragut, David G. Carte de visite portrait records the Union admiral whose Civil War service included command at New Orleans and Mobile Bay. Farragut became the first rear admiral, vice admiral, and full admiral in United States naval history. He is most closely associated with the August 1864 Battle of Mobile Bay and the command traditionally rendered as "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead," issued during the Union fleet's advance past Confederate mines and Fort Morgan. Sepia-toned carte de visite, 2.5 x 4 inches, showing Farragut in a bust portrait wearing United States Navy uniform. The image presents him in formal military dress and identifies him visually with the senior Union naval command of the Civil War. No photographer's or publisher's back mark is present. Farragut's capture of New Orleans in 1862 secured a major Confederate port for the Union, while his victory at Mobile Bay in 1864 closed one of the Confederacy's last important Gulf ports to blockade runners. This portrait preserves the widely circulated visual image of the officer associated with those campaigns and with the expansion of Union naval power during the war.
