Añadir al carritoNone. Condición: None. Two pages in two hands on a single folded sheet, with an integral address panel directed to "Miss L. A. Fannin / Madison / Ga." Approximately 39.4 × 24.8 cm (15½ × 9¾ in.). Red circular "Augusta & Atlanta R.R." postal marking and manuscript "5" rate notation. In English. A revealing firsthand account of illness among enslaved people and its treatment as a subject of ordinary family correspondence in antebellum Georgia. Written jointly by two women, very likely sisters of Madison's Fannin-Porter family, the letter places news of scarlet fever among enslaved people alongside the treatment of a relative, concern for a child's safety, and reports of visiting, childbirth, clothing, gardening, and household provisions. The first writer reports: "All said all the negroes have had the sarlet fever," before describing a male relative's illness: "All had a very sore throat and high fever Mrs Allen gave him Dr Simmons fever medicine he has quite recovered." The passage records illness affecting enslaved people collectively, while the relative receives an individual account of symptoms, treatment, and recovery. The second writer makes the danger of infection a reason to postpone a family visit: "you must not expect us down till you all get well I would not have the boy exposed to the scarlet fever for nothing." Later she again asks for information: "you must write soon whether the scarlet fever is there." Together, these passages show correspondence serving a practical role in assessing illness at a distance and deciding when a child could safely visit relatives. The letter thus documents both the circulation of health information within a slaveholding family network and the unequal detail with which illness among its members and enslaved people was recorded. Other medical news broadens the account of community health. The second writer mentions a man from Monroe whose leg had been broken "at the circle," two women in poor health, and a little girl who "has gone entirely blind." The cause of the blindness is not stated. These reports appear among domestic and social details: plentiful milk and butter, the late sowing of garden seeds, a barrel of grease, overnight visits, and clothing brought from Augusta. "Frank" has given Ann and the second writer material for garments which they have made and are already wearing. The signatures and family references strongly suggest that the writers were Ann Mapp Fannin and her elder sister Margaret Porter Fannin Allen. Margaret married Francis Marion Allen (1814-1897) in Walton County in January 1845; her initials correspond exactly to "M. P. Allen," while her husband's name offers a plausible identification of "Frank." Ann remained unmarried until February 1860, when she married Joel Crawford Barnett, a Madison lawyer and subsequently a Confederate officer. The reference to "Ann & I" in the second contribution further supports the identification of the two writers as sisters. Their father, Jephthah, or Jeptha, Fannin (1785-1848), belonged to the early settler generation of Morgan County. An 1895 biography of their brother James Anthony Fannin (1821-1909) describes their father's establishment of the family home on newly cleared land, service as the county's first Superior Court clerk, and participation in the War of 1812 and a war against the Creek people. The letter also preserves a distinctive feature of railroad postal history. Its faint red "Augusta & Atlanta R.R." marking was identified by the previous dealer, Kurt A. Sanftleben, as Towle 455-A-4, a station-agent marking recorded for 1851-1857, providing the basis for the proposed dating. Carried over the Augusta-Atlanta route of the Georgia Railroad, the folded letter connects the family's exchange of medical and domestic news with the expanding railroad mail network.…
