Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book stands as an indispensable guide to the marvelous world of Greenland's whales and other cetaceans. Beginning with a substantive historical overview, the author meticulously introduces the rich legacy of Greenlandic whaling. Within this context, the reader is engaged with a chronological presentation of 18th-century scientific expeditions to the Greenland Seas, and the significant zoological discoveries that emerged from these voyages. The author's comprehensive work meticulously classifies and describes 16 cetacean species, providing detailed morphological descriptions and behavioral insights. Alongside these scientific observations, the author incorporates a wealth of fascinating stories from Greenlandic whalers, offering a firsthand glimpse into the perilous and captivating world of Arctic whaling. The book's overarching narrative is one of scientific inquiry and discovery. By combining historical context with zoological expertise, the author offers a unique perspective on the relationship between humans and marine life in the frigid waters of Greenland. Through the author's skillful storytelling, the reader gains a deep understanding of how whaling practices have impacted the complex ecosystem of the Arctic, and the profound impact these remarkable creatures have had on the lives of humans throughout history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Morten P. Porsild Copy, with his signature in ink on the front free fly. A few notes, in pencil, on the margins; probably E.A.P. WorldCat lists only one copy; Danish National Library, dated 1807. No listing for the second title. Gadd. History of Greenland. V2. - Of the successive missionaries. Otho Fabricius was the most gifted. The coal-mining failures revealed how ill-informed were those stationed in Greenland, the managers of the Trade at home and even high-ranking Government officials. Through the constantly repeated instructions to the traders to report on anything note that was observed, and by the diligent perusal of journals, reports and letters, it was sought to obtain the necessary knowledge. The need for an expert description of Greenland was pressing. The missionary Otho Fabricius was fully aware of this. When he returned from Greenland in 1774 he began working out his idea of a topographical description of the country, to replace Hans Egede's Perlustration and give far more factual and accurate information than the Moravian, David Cranz, had been able to contribute. Fabricius must have begun work while still in Greenland, because in October 1774 he had already submitted a plan of the work, part of which was ready for making a fair copy, the rest could be written out if he received the necessary facilities. Before Fabricius went off to his Norwegian benefice, however, two tasks were officially entrusted to him - one the description of Greenland, following his own suggestion, the other a new dictionary. However, this great work never emerged. Until 1783, Fabricius' duties took him to parishes far from the centers of knowledge where the sources he needed could be found, and the requisite description of districts in Greenland which he did not know personally eluded him. The demand made of the missionaries that they should describe their districts could not be met with the means of transport available to them, and without several years of continuous travel, and their missionary work would have suffered. Several missionaries declined outright to comply with his requests. This is most likely why in 1780 he printed the part of the work that he had already started. This was his famous Fauna Groenlandica, the first systematic description of its kind, which showed to the world the richness and variety of the subarctic fauna, although based mainly on his own observation over a short period and on a limited stretch of coast. Of the comprehensive description of Greenland, only fragmentary drawings and some drafts still exist.
