A Very Good - set. 12mo., [Vol.1] 302; [Vol.2] 322; [Vol.3] 448 pp. Bound in quarter red leather and marbled paper boards, with title and volume on the five compartment spines in gilt. Text pages age-toning, with occasional spots of browning/foxing. Hinges very strong. Berthold Auerbach (1812 - 1882) was a German poet and author. He was the founder of the German "tendency novel", in which fiction is used as a means of influencing public opinion on social, political, moral, and religious questions. Christian Bernhard Tauchnitz, German publisher, paid the English authors for the works his company published, and agreed to limit their sales of English-language books to the European continent. In 1841, Tauchnitz started his English-language editions, with the series "Collection Of British Authors". Although Tauchnitz's editions were authorized, and listed as the 'Copyright Edition', they were not protected from copyright infringement and he could offer no such protection to the authors he paid.…

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. First edition thus. A magnificent, ultra-large Victorian folio (approx. 50cm x 39cm). Baron de la Motte Fouqué's classic romantic water-spirit fairy tale, elegantly translated by F. E. Bunnett. A masterclass in late 19th-century book production, this unpaginated volume is lavishly illustrated by Julius Höppner with 9 stunning, full-page chromolithographed plates (including a gorgeous illustrated tissue frontispiece), all retaining their original protective tissue guards. The heavy text pages are beautifully presented within elaborate decorative sepia-toned borders, complete with detailed head and tail-piece vignettes. Presented in the publisher's original deluxe cream cloth, heavily decorated with delicate gilt filigree designs which remain in Very Good condition. The cloth shows only a few minor marks, with a little rubbing to the top and tail of the spine and the edges of the bevelled boards. The center decorative illustration panel on the front board remains remarkably bright, showing just a few faint surface scratches. Internally, the front hinge is a little weak but holding securely. The volume is complete with all 9 stunning plates. All text pages and plates, with full edge gilt, are in Very Good condition, displaying only light smatterings of foxing restricted to the borders and edges of the pages, alongside the odd minor handling mark. The internal text and artwork remain incredibly crisp and bright. A beautiful, structurally sound copy of a notoriously fragile, heavy-gauge gift volume. A breathtaking masterpiece of Victorian book production. Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué's immortal romantic fairy tale of the elemental water-spirit Undine and her quest for a human soul is brought to life on a grand scale. Lavishly illustrated with Julius Höppner's spectacular, large-format chromolithographic plates, this monumental 1885 folio blends striking Pre-Raphaelite aesthetic style with masterful late 19th-century German colour printing. A magnificent and enchanting centerpiece for any library of classic folklore and fantasy art. This is a very heavy book and may cost more for overseas orders, please contact us for shipping quotes.
