Wraps. Condición: Fair. Frank Kerr (Caricature of President Roosevelt insi Ilustrador. Presumed First Edition, First printing. The format is approximately 7.375 inches by 10 inches. Unpaginated (approximately 100 pages, counting covers). Illustrated with over 150 photographs. Front cover is decorative and nearly separated from the the spine. Cover worn, torn soiled and chipped. Page discoloration noted. This was promptly assembled and published shortly after President Roosevelt died. Aaron Jacob Ezickson (1896-1971) was a renown photojournalist. Photojournalism is journalism that uses images to tell a news story. It usually only refers to still images. Photojournalism is distinguished from other branches of photography by having a rigid ethical framework which demands an honest and impartial approach that tells a story in strictly journalistic terms. Photojournalists must be knowledgeable, and are able to deliver news in a creative manner that is both informative and entertaining. A photojournalist is a reporter, but they must carry photographic equipment, often while exposed to physical danger and limited physical access to their subjects. The first photograph to be used in illustration of a newspaper story was a depiction of barricades in Paris during the June Days uprising taken on 25 June 1848; the photo was published as an engraving in L'Illustration of 1-8 July 1848. During the Crimean War, the ILN pioneered early photojournalism by printing pictures of the war that had been taken by Roger Fenton. Fenton was the first official war photographer and his work included documenting the effects of the war on the troops, and portraits of commanders, which laid the groundwork for modern photojournalism. Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 - April 12, 1945), commonly known by his initials FDR, was an American statesman and politician who served as the 32nd president of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945. The longest serving U.S. president, he is the only president to have served more than two terms. His initial two terms were centered on combating the Great Depression, while his third and fourth saw him shift his focus to America's involvement in World War II. A member of the prominent Delano and Roosevelt families, Roosevelt was elected to the New York State Senate from 1911 to 1913 and was then the assistant secretary of the Navy under President Woodrow Wilson during World War I. Roosevelt was James M. Cox's running mate on the Democratic Party's ticket in the 1920 U.S. presidential election, but Cox lost to Republican nominee Warren G. Harding. In 1921, Roosevelt contracted a paralytic illness that permanently paralyzed his legs. Partly through the encouragement of his wife, Eleanor Roosevelt, he returned to public office as governor of New York from 1929 to 1933, during which he promoted programs to combat the Great Depression. In the 1932 presidential election, Roosevelt defeated president Herbert Hoover in a landslide victory. During his first 100 days as president, Roosevelt spearheaded unprecedented federal legislation and directed the federal government during most of the Great Depression, implementing the New Deal, building the New Deal coalition, and realigning American politics into the Fifth Party System. He created numerous programs to provide relief to the unemployed and farmers while seeking economic recovery with the National Recovery Administration and other programs. He also instituted major regulatory reforms related to finance, communications, and labor, and presided over the end of Prohibition. In 1936, Roosevelt won a landslide reelection. He was unable to expand the Supreme Court in 1937, the same year the conservative coalition was formed to block the implementation of further New Deal programs and reforms. Major surviving programs and legislation implemented under Roosevelt include the Securities and Exchange Commission, the National Labor Relations Act, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and Social Security. In 1940, he ran successfully for reelection, one entire term before the official implementation of term limits. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, Roosevelt obtained a declaration of war on Japan. After Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. on December 11, 1941, the U.S. Congress approved additional declarations of war in return. He worked closely with other national leaders in leading the Allies against the Axis powers. Roosevelt supervised the mobilization of the American economy to support the war effort and implemented a Europe first strategy. He also initiated the development of the first atomic bomb and worked with the other Allied leaders to lay the groundwork for the United Nations and other post-war institutions, even coining the term "United Nations". Roosevelt won reelection in 1944 but died in 1945 after his physical health seriously and steadily declined during the war years. Historical rankings consistently place him among the five greatest American presidents.

In this beautiful book the authors recreate?in text and in photographs?the warmth, the sincerity, the greatness, the energy, the shyness, and the wisdom of the person who became a universal symbol of the new role women were to assume in this century. Helen Gahagan Douglas, who knew Mrs. Roosevelt for more than twenty-three years, has captured the spirit of Eleanor Roosevelt and the mood of Americans?and people everywhere? who wish to remember her. In choosing the more than 150 photographs of Mrs. Roosevelt, Aaron Ezickson selected from thousands at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park, the files of the Associated Press, and many other sources. The photographs, arranged in chronological order, show Mrs. Roosevelt from childhood to 1962: as a bride; with her family; in Albany as Governor's wife; in Washington as First Lady; traveling to American military bases during the Second World War; at the UN; with world leaders; among the poor, the sick, the desperate. The truly great photograph by Philippe Halsman that appears on the jacket and as a frontispiece has not heretofore been published. The captions for each photograph, tributes by Adlai Stevenson, U Thant, and other world leaders, add an important dimension to this book. [About the author] Eleanor Roosevelt had a profound influence on the life of Helen Gahagan Douglas. They were friends for more than twenty-three years. In the late 1930's Mrs. Douglas's efforts on behalf of migrant farm workers brought her to the attention of Mrs. Roosevelt. In order to support President Roosevelt's administration, Mrs. Douglas entered politics in California in 1940 as National Committeewoman and State Vice-Chairman. It was at the President's request that she ran for Congress, where she served as Representative from California from 1946 to 1951. In 1946 Mrs. Roosevelt and Mrs. Douglas were appointed by President Truman as members of the United States delegation to the First Assembly of the United Nations. Mrs. Douglas served there on the Financial and Economic Committee with Adlai E. Stevenson. Eleanor Roosevelt campaigned for Mrs. Douglas in her race for the Senate in 1950. They served together on the National Advisory Committee on Farm Labor from its founding in 1958. Mrs. Douglas visited Mrs. Roosevelt frequently at the White House, and later at Hyde Park, and at her home in New York City. Mrs. Douglas lives in New York with her husband, Melvyn Douglas. Inscribed by Author(s).
