Añadir al carritoFirst editions. Presentation copy of John Bachman's important evolutionary work on monogenism bound with a shorter pamphlet on the same subject, opposing the views of Samuel Morton. Bachman was known for his work with Audubon, specifically onViviparous Quadrupeds of North America,but this publication was perhaps more important especially in the development of the theory of evolution in America. Bachman basically stood alone at the time rejecting the prevailing views of polygenism using scientific principles. Bachman was also a Lutheran pastor who, though he owned slaves, ministered to African Americans as well as white Southerners. This kind of contradiction is prevalent in his writings which argue theologically and scientifically against slavery and racism while at the same time describing the intellectual and cultural inferiority of Black people. In any event, Bachman's works represent an important contribution to the intellectual opposition to racial hierarchies in 19th century America. Sammelband of two works, 23x14cm, [3], 312, [1] - errata; and [3], 35pp. Both presentation copies inscribed on the front fly and front wrapper respectively, to a Dr. James Wilson from the author. Original wraps for the shorter work bound in. Recent quarter polished calf over marbled boards with black spine label lettered in gilt. Moderate foxing to the first and last 75 or so pages of the larger work with marginal damp staining to upper edge throughout. Very good.…
