He was renowned in his day for the Scandinavian subjects he depicted following his trip to Norway and Sweden in 1644. This catalogue of Everdingen's drawings presents 670 authentic water colors, ink drawings and oil sketches on paper in comprehensive, illustrated entries. The accompanying text explores many facets of his activity as a draftsman, including his use of paper, and also discusses later collectors of his sheets, their marks and inscriptions, and many imitations and copies of the master's drawing extant today. High points from Everdingen's production include his trip sketches (both from his travels to Scandinavia and from a trip he made to the Ardennes in 1656), his masterworks showing Dutch scenery, his allegorical series (Twelve Month, Four Seasons and Four Elements) and his studies and transfer drawings for both his Scandinavian landscape etchings and the prints he made to illustrate the fable Reynard the Fox. Monographs on Dutch & Flemisch Painting, Vol. XV). = New copy !!This study of Allart van Everdingen (1621-1675) draws particular attention to his significant contribution to the history of art as the earliest painter of the landscape of Scandinavia. A native of Alkmaar, Everdingen started out painting marines in the Porcellis-de Vlieger tradition. His only known indigenous landscape from his first period is a dunescape in the style of his reputed teacher Pieter Molijn. In 1644 he traveled to Norway and Sweden where he made sketches of several identified sites. After his return to the Netherlands he specialized in Nordic scenes, characterized by craggy mountains and crashing waterfalls, quiet fjords or rivers, huge boulders, fir trees, and log cabins. Here, the influence of his second-named teacher Roelant Savery is discernible in the earliest works. These paintings were eagerly collected by his countrymen and emulated by other artists, most significantly by Holland's leading landscape painter Jacob van Ruisdael, who himself had no direct experience with the foreign subjects being portrayed. - - Including a catalogue raisonné of Everdingen's paintings by Alice I. Seinen ersten Unterricht erhielt Everdingen von R. Savery (1576-1639) in Utrecht, dann von P. Molijn (1595-1661) in Haarlem; 1645 wurde er hier in das Verzeichnis der Meister aufgenommen. Wenig ist über sein Leben bekannt, doch wissen wir, daß er von kurz nach 1640 bis um 1644 in Schweden und Norwegen reiste, wo er ausgiebig nach der Natur zeichnete. Die dort gewonnenen Landschaftsmotive verwandte er nach seiner Rückkehr in vielen seiner Arbeiten. Er war hauptsächlich als Zeichner und Radierer tätig. Ölgemälde finden sich in seinem Werk nicht viele. Seestücke sind in seinem Werk seltener und stammen aus seiner frühen Schaffenszeit.
