First edition of this comprehensive report on one of the most important scientific and archaeological missions of the nineteenth century, the 1864 expedition to the Dead Sea undertaken by the visionary art collector, archaeologist, and scientist Honoré Paul Joseph d'Albert, duc de Luynes (1802-1867). Along with an atlas containing 78 reproductions of photographs by Louis Vignes (1831-1896), Jardin (fl. 1864), and Henri Joseph Sauvaire (1831-1896), this work documents "the first systematic attempt to survey and photograph the geological features and cities of the Dead Sea basin in present-day Jordan. In addition to mapping the Dead Sea area, the expedition made significant contributions to the geological and paleontological knowledge of the region and also to an understanding of the chemical composition of the lake's waters" (GRI). Louis Vignes, a lieutenent-commander in the French navy and director since 1860 of the port in Beirut, was chosen by de Luynes as photographer for the expedition because of his knowledge of the Levant. "Vignes began to photograph immediately upon arrival in Beirut and continued to do so during the ride south throughout Sidon, Tyre, Nablus, and Jerusalem. From March 14 until May 29 the party sailed the entire Dead Sea on a special iron vessel designed by Vignes to be dismantled for easy trasportation" (Perez). A preliminary account, edited by Vignes, appeared as Extrait des notes d'un voyage d'exploration à la mer Morte, dans le Wady Arabah, sur la rive gauche du Jourdain et dans le désert de Palmyre (Paris: H. Plon, 1865). This work essentially comprised a key to the two maps drawn by Vignes, with assistance from Dr. Gustave Combe. The larger of the two maps charted the Jordan Rift Valley from the southern end of the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Akabah; the second map depicts the Dead Sea and its immediate vicinity. "In addition to tracing the expedition's routes, place names, elevations, vegetation, land conditions, natural features and many other geomorphic and climatic details are recorded on the maps" (GRI). In the Atlas volume of the Voyage, these two maps have been combined into a single map (printed surface: 69.7 by 28.8 cm). In 1866 de Luynes made a second expedition to the region, accompanied by the archaeologist Christophe Edouard Mauss and Henri Sauv.

A rare lithographic print series commemorating the Battle of Kinburn (Kil-Bouroun) on the south bank of the Dnieper River near the Crimea. On 17 October 1855, during the Crimean War, the French and British navies attacked the Russian outpost there with a fleet of ironclad ships, destroying the fortifications within hours and suffering only light damage. This decisive success, seven years before the famous battle of the Monitor and the Merrimack in the American Civil War, heralded the demise of the traditional wooden warship. Though made from the land, mostly after the battle itself, nearly all show maritime scenes, with large and detailed depictions of the ironclad ships on the ice-bound river. They also show the ruined fortifications in great detail. With some marginal tears repaired but still in very good condition, with only an occasional minor spot. The portfolio is also very good, with a couple small water stains on the silk of the front board. He was miffed at the credit Lesseps received and had this portrait removed from those 200 copies. The album is a collection of watercolors from life following and commemorating the inauguration of the Suez Canal, from the ceremonies of 16th November 1869 up to the crossing between the 17th - 20thNovember. . . . Born towards the end of Napoleon's reign, Eugène Ciceri spent his formative years in an extended family of painters. His father, Pierre Luc Charles Ciceri (1782-1868), painted grand decorative murals and stage sets, and served as the designer of official ceremonies following the Restoration of Louis XVIII in 1814. Young Ciceri learned the basics of his craft from his father, and subsequently from his great-uncle Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767-1855) who enjoyed extensive patronage under Napoleon, as well as the royalist rulers of the 1820s and 1830s. Like many young men, Ciceri seems to have traveled overseas in his 20s, perhaps as part of his military service. Two watercolors from 1837 depict unspecified Caribbean landscapes that might well be scenes from French territories such as Martinique, Haiti or St. Martin. On his return to France, he followed in his father's footsteps as a decorative painter, and undertook a large mural commission for the civic auditorium at LeMans. The grand opening of this public work took place on 13 May 1842. However, it seems to have been the last time that Ciceri accepted a mural commission on this scale. Not surprisingly, he made his Salon debut in 1851 at the exhibition now recognized for admitting the previously unwelcome Realist and Barbizon artists. By the late 1870s, Ciceri's color palette brightened and his subject matter became much more focused on relationships in nature - the sky, water, and earth. His works became vast and full of movement - a feat greatly seen in his Les Pyrénées. The painter died in 1890, leaving behind a stunning artistic legacy, with his works found in museums across the globes and private collections. AN IMPORTANT COLLECTION, IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, OF 19TH-CENTURY DEPICTIONS OF PYRENEAN SCENERY, executed in lithography (often hand-colored), aquatint, and engraving. ***(1) An unusually fine set of Melling's large folio "Voyage pittoresque dans les Pyrenees francais" (1826-1830), complete with 72 delicate aquatints, a map, a lithographed portrait of the artist, and the text by Cervini. Attractively bound and with clean, unfoxed plates (most unusual for this book). ***(2) TWO fine sets of Victor Petit's folio "Souvenirs des Pyrenees", with about 50 lithographs per set. The first set is beautifully hand-colored on fine wove paper; the second set uncolored on chine. As usual with these albums, the sets offer interesting bibliographical differences. ***(3) Two beautiful sets (30 lithographs per set) of Petit's folio "Bagneres de Luchon et ses environs", one colored and one uncolored on chine. ***(4) Two excellent (and different) complete sets of Ciceri's "Les Pyrenees dessinees d'apres nature", both very fresh, in their original bindings. ***(5) Two copies (one colored, one uncolored) of "Alpes et Pyrenees" (1842), both in publisher's cloth. ***(6) Several additional albums by Gorse (two, one with rectangular lithographs and one with oval), Allom, and others, including a few miniature albums. Many of these items are quite rare, and all are in very good condition. Several hundred prints in all. An outstanding collection. (I may consider selling one or more items separately.
