The expedition sailed around Cape Horn, visited the Marquesas Islands (discovering several islands), explored the coast of the Queen Charlotte Islands (Haida Gwaii), and continued to China before returning to France. Le tome 5 est consacré aux « recherches sur les îles et le Port découverts par Sir Francis Drake, en 1578, dans le Grand Océan Austral », ainsi qu'à l'« Examen critique des Relations du Voyage autour du monde, en 1721 et 1722, par l'Amiral hollandais Roggeween ». Cette importante relation décrit le voyage entrepris par le capitaine Étienne Marchand (1755-1793) à bord du Solide pour le commerce des fourrures sur la côte nord-ouest de l'Amérique du Nord, en particulier l'Alaska. Elle renferme des observations sur la navigation dans le Pacifique, sur les peuples et l'histoire naturelle des contrées visitées, dont beaucoup étaient encore inconnues des anciens navigateurs et de Cook. L'ouvrage a été publié par Charles-Pierre Claret de Fleurieu (1738-1810), ministre de la Marine dès 1790. N'ayant pu se procurer le Journal même du capitaine Marchand, sa relation se fonde principalement sur celui du capitaine en second Prosper Chanal, lequel avait été chargé personnellement, pendant le cours du Voyage, de toutes les « Reconnoissances qui ont été faites, soit des îles découvertes ou visitées dans le Grand-Océan, soit des parties de la Côte Nord-Ouest de l'Amérique, où le Solide a fait la Traite des Pelleteries » (cf. t.
