En él relata la estancia de Aquiles en el gineceo del rey Licomedes de Esciros, disfrazado de doncella por su madre Tetis, temerosa de que se cumplieran los vaticinios sobre la muerte temprana del héroe ante las murallas de Troya. Allí, mientras es buscado por Ulises y Diomedes, se enamora de la bella Deidamia, hija del rey, y fruto de su amor furtivo es el pequeño Pirro. Pero nacido que hubo el niño, los héroes griegos descubren el engaño con un ingenioso ardid, y Aquiles se da a conocer como tal para asombro de su suegro y dolor de la que será ya su esposa, pero que dejará en pos de la gloria a la que había sido llamado desde la cuna. Queda así el epos convertido en epilio, dejando por un momento -creemos- el ardor guerrero para sumergirse en las tenues aguas de la musa amorosa con un toque de comedia: el retrato de héroe adolescente que antes de iniciarse en los misterios de la brutalidad rompe las cadenas que lo atan a su niñez, descubriendo primero su propio Aquiles.
