Deze catalogus verschijnt bij de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam (8 februari-11 mei 2014). De tentoonstelling is een unieke samenkomst van het werk van drie van de meest invloedrijke kunstenaars van de twintigste eeuw: Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957), Medardo Rosso (1858-1928) en Man Ray (1890-1976). De tentoongestelde en in de catalogus besproken werken, waarvan vijfenveertig sculpturen en een honderdtal foto's die zij van hun sculpturen maakten, bieden een blik over de schouder van deze kunstenaars. Brancusi, Rosso en Man Ray zijn alledrie niet alleen beslissend geweest voor de ontwikkeling van de moderne beeldhouwkunst, maar bovendien maakten zij in hun werk op vernieuwende wijze gebruik van fotografie. De kunstenaars zetten de fotografie niet zozeer in om hun werk te registreren, maar als een middel om duidelijk te maken hoe toeschouwers hun sculpturen moesten zien en interpreteren. Ze gebruikten de - voor die tijd - experimentele mogelijkheden van het medium, zoals overbelichting, vernieuwende camerastandpunten en het vervagen van voor- of achtergrond. De catalogus bevat beschrijvingen van alle tentoongestelde werken en essays over de drie kunstenaars door de conservatoren van de tentoonstelling. Rotterdam-based artist Madeleine Berkhemer (1973-2019) considered sensuality and eroticism to be fundamental parts of life. She used various art forms and techniques to explore the power of the female body and the way it evokes both desire and discomfort. Berkhemer made drawings, collages, (stocking) sculptures, installations and performances, often using her own body. After training as a fashion designer, Berkhemer soon decided to focus entirely on art. The physical aspect of fashion and the glamour surrounding continued to play an important role in her sensual and theatrical work, which was based on the body, role-playing and beauty. Numerous collaborations with famous photographers and (fashion) designers complete the collage-like coherence of Berkhemer's highly varied oeuvre. This richly illustrated book is the first overview of her work.
