Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. Vallisaari and Kuninkaansaari, located just off Helsinki, a stone's throw from Suomenlinna, have been part of the Gulf of Finland's maritime defense system since the 18th century. The closed fortress islands have been ruled by the authorities, then Helsinki pilots since the late 18th century and the military since the beginning of the period of autonomy. The islands have remained almost unknown to outsiders. However, their conversion from a military island to a civilian island is under way, as in 2008 the Defense Forces announced their abandonment. The liberation of the islands as part of the national landscape of maritime Helsinki poses challenges. How to combine the preservation of cultural and historical values, the preservation of the diverse nature of the area and the desire of the general public to visit the islands? The jewels of the crown depict Vallisaari and Kuninkaansaari from many perspectives. Ove Enqvist talks about the stages of the islands, and fine photographs by Taneli Eskola reveal the current state and landscape values;of the islands. The book is also illustrated with archival photos and maps. Text only in Finnish. 303 pp.…
