All pages tanned with age; some have spotty stains on the edges. Ink notes on entirety of rear free endpaper. Tears in pages 11-12 and on plates 21 and 23. Binding tight. A ragged but intact and readable copy of a rare 17th-century book. Known as the "father of French fortification," mathematician and engineer Jean Errard (d. 1610) brought Italian methods of military fortification to France at the court of Henry IV. This treatise on the construction of such fortifications is regarded as a classic 17th-century text on the topic. Measures approx. 12.25" x 8". Text is in French.
