In Italien war aus der glühenden Begeisterung einzelner Männer für das römisch-griechische Altertum die Freude aller Gebildeten an den Schätzen der römischen, sodann auch der griechischen Schriftwerke erwachsen. Wissenschaft und Kunst feierten eine Wiedergeburt zu einem neuen, hoffnungsvollen Leben, das durch grosse Dichter und Künstler mit schöpferischer Kraft erfüllt wurde. Immer neue Nahrung gewann dieses Leben durch Entdeckungen auf heimischem Boden; Handschriften, Tempel, Bildsäulen wurden der Vergessenheit entzogen: da wurde am 14. Januar 1506 auch die Laokoongruppe entdeckt, auf dem mons Esquilinus in einem schön ausgestatteten besonderen Zimmer bei den Thermen des Kaisers Trajan, bzw. Titus. In einer Tiefe von ungefähr 6 Ellen gelangten die Entdecker dieses kostbaren Fundes in den Raum und fanden das Werk ziemlich unversehrt. Der Raum war nicht nur verschlossen, sondern vermauert: zur Zeit einer drohenden Plünderung hat also ein Kunstfreund diesen Schatz vor Barbaren gehütet und sich dadurch um die Menschheit hoch verdient gemacht. Die Freude der Römer und weiter der ganzen gebildeten Welt war eine übergrosse und steigerte sich, als man aus Plinius naturalis historia XXXVI 37 ersah, dass auch dieser so vielseitig gebildete Römer, der mit seinem Lobe sparsam war, dies Werk vor allen gelobt hatte.
