The excavation area on the main street of the city opened a deep insight into Chinese crafts quarters and the living conditions of residents in the 13th and 14th Centuries AD. This publication includes findings from the excavations in the city center as well as contributions on the research history of Karakorum, but also on environmental geography and history of religion. Karakorum, die erste Hauptstadt des mongolischen Weltreiches wird seit 1998 von Archäologen der Universität Bonn in einem interdisziplinären und internationalen Kooperationsprojekt erforscht. Die erstmalige langjährige Untersuchung einer neugegründeten Stadt in der mongolischen Steppe wirft neues Licht auf die Komplexität reiternomadischer Organisationsformen. Die Grabungsfläche an der Hauptstraße der Stadt eröffnen tiefe Einblicke in ein chinesisch geprägtes Handwerkerviertel sowie die Lebensumstände der Bewohner im 13./14. Jahrhundert n. Chr. Die Publikation umfasst Funde und Befunde aus den Grabungen in der Stadtmitte sowie Beiträge zur Erforschungsgeschichte Karakorums, aber auch zur Umweltgeographie und zur Religionsgeschichte.
