It features interviews with label founder Ivo Watts-Russell, Oliver and Grierson, along with articles on The Cocteau Twins and Throwing Muses, quotes from numerous 4AD artists, and most significantly an eight page design insert produced by 23 Envelope especially for this issue. An internally bright,handsome example of this most uncommon, highly prized v23 / 4AD document showing some mild dampstaining and insect damage to its bright orange covers along with some creasing through the heel of the spine. Scarce Russian émigré publication documenting the atrocities committed by the Austro-Hungarian (Habsburg) authorities against the Galician population during World War I. The first volume, titled Galician Golgotha, presents documentary evidence, eyewitness testimonies, and reports describing the persecution, mass arrests, and internment of Rusyns and Ukrainians in Austrian concentration camps such as Thalerhof and Terezin between 1914 and 1917. Published in the United States by Peter S. Hardy for the Russian émigré community, this edition had a very limited print run (reportedly under 500 copies). Copies are held by only a few major research institutions (Harvard, Yale, Hoover Institution). Black cloth binding with gilt title on cover and spine; original green illustrated dust jacket depicting a barbed chain and scenes of deportation. Clean inte firm binding, minor shelf wear and light ru J to jacket edges. An important and extremely rare documentary source on the wartime repressions of Eastern Slavs under the Habsburg Monarchy.

Important almanac of the Russian diaspora, compiled by the prominent San Francisco-based Russian author Pyotr Balakshin (1898-1990). Balakshin arrived in California in 1925 and pursued his studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He is widely recognized for his definitive historical work, Final in China, which documents the collapse of the White Army in the Far East and its subsequent retreat across the Chinese border. The periodical brings together works by local writers and poets (including T. Bazhenova and B. Volkov) alongside distinguished literary figures from abroad. Among the important contributors is Tamara Andreeva, who immigrated to the United States from Harbin, where she had previously published in the journal Rubezh. She later served on the editorial staff of Columbus's Land and published extensively in both Russian-language periodicals and American publications like Blue Book and California Anthology. The inaugural issue of Columbus's Land features a short essay titled "Let's Rejoice!" by Nikolai Roerich (with whom Balakshin maintained a brief correspondence), as well as one of Balakshin's own most accomplished stories, "Spring over Fillmore." Through this publication, Balakshin intentionally created a platform for authors of the Russian diaspora from China, facilitating the first American appearance of poems by Lev Grosse, Natalia Reznikova, Lydia Khaindrova, and Arseny Nesmelov (writers with whom he corresponded for many years.) While preparing the third issue, Balakshin entered into correspondence with Marina Tsvetaeva, who agreed in principle to contribute her poetry. However, the project was discontinued due to financial difficulties before this collaboration could be realized. Both volumes contain substantial advertising sections listing businesses owned by the Russian diaspora in San Francisco, including tea rooms, beauty salons, hat shops, music studios, the Novinka bookshop, and the Siberian Market. Written in response to intense public controversy, the work explicitly rejects antisemitism, affirms the historic persecution of Jews under Tsarism, and categorically denies collective Jewish guilt for Bolshevik crimes. At the same time, Artsybashev controversially acknowledges the disproportionate presence of Jews in Soviet administrative structures, arguing that honest recognition of this reality is necessary to prevent, rather than fuel, pogrom violence. Of particular Jewish-historical interest is Artsybashev's early psychological definition of antisemitism as a distorted mental disposition arising from fear, hunger, and political collapse, as well as his explicit warnings that denial and inflammatory rhetoric would lead to mass violence against Jews. The pamphlet is notable for its prescient engagement with pogrom dynamics in post-Revolutionary Russia.
