The catalogue contains examplary and hiterto unpublished drawings by Denon and his circle, along with a fine group of prints. Many are rare impressions of which several are in proof or undescribed states. Dominique-Vivant Denon (1745-1825) would be best remembered as one of the eminent graphic artists of his generation, had he not been so engaged and successful in so many other fields and functions: artist, writer, diplomat (spy?), collector, archaeologist, museologist, socialite and seducer. He became one of Napoleon's confidants and was appointed Directeur Général du Musée Central des Arts in 1802 which constitutes today's Musée du Louvre. It is significant, yet lesser known, that Denon was also one of the finest printmakers in France around 1800. - from the Emanuel von Baeyer web site.
