Añadir al carritoCondición: Very good. A January 1863 letter from James O. Miller of Montgomery, New York, to a young Union soldier whose family Miller knew at home. Miller explains that he sees the soldier's father pass "every day the brick house," and that knowing the father "had two smart boys in the army" made him "feel for him and you too."… He had already written once to Henry, apparently the recipient's younger brother, and now expected a reply from this soldier in turn. The letter has the tone of a village elder or family acquaintance writing into the army: affectionate, moralizing, curious, and full of local news. Miller asks the soldier to tell him his age because, as he writes, "I know you are young but older than Henry," adding that Henry "will be means of putting in five minutes of his time and it will be something for him to think of for a week." He also mentions the soldier's father receiving a letter from Henry, a planned box from home, and local deaths, illness, mud, snow, furloughs, and a soldiers' benefit at Coldenham. Miller writes only weeks after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect, and gives a direct response to Lincoln's policy: "I think the Presidents Proclamation of Emancipation will work good put arms in the slaves hand and tell them they must fight for there liberty. I think of you soldiers when I go to bed having a good one and you leaving a good one to defend your country and mine to so that your father and me can enjoy our homes & firesides." He urges the soldier to read the Bible, asks about camp preaching, and wonders whether soldiers keep their guns loaded while hearing sermons: "Read your Bible a portion every day and I suppose it strange to you if I would tell you it will make you a better soldier [.] When you write tell me who your chaplin is, how many sermons he preaches in a week they ought not to be more than 15 minutes long because you have no seats and the enemy may surprise you is one more reason for short sermons and tell me in your letter whether you carry your guns with you and have them loaded when you go to hear the chaplin preach." Miller also notes local Copperhead or pro-Southern feeling in Montgomery: "There is some southern sympathy with us in Montgomery who wish the south would whip us. There is no such thing in the book we are bound to whip them." A good Northern home-front Civil War letter, with immediate support for the Emancipation Proclamation, arming enslaved men, local anti-Confederate feeling, religious advice to a soldier, and the informal village networks connecting families at home to soldiers in the field. . Issued by the War Department to regimental commanders in the field dur…ing the Civil War in the week after the completion of President Lincoln's official manuscript version. Contained is a set of three volumes of General Orders covering the full year 1862, July-Dec 1863, and the full year 1864. History of the Emancipation Proclamation: "The proclamation has been called by responsible persons one of the three great documents of world history, ranking with Magna Carta and the Declaration of Independence" Eberstadt "From the first days of the Civil War, slaves had acted to secure their own liberty. The Emancipation Proclamation confirmed their insistence that the war for the Union must become a war for freedom. It added moral force to the Union cause and strengthened the Union both militarily and politically. As a milestone along the road to slavery's final destruction, the Emancipation Proclamation has assumed a place among the great documents of human freedom" National Archives Following the Seven Days Battle and General McClellan's retreat from the Peninsula, at the end of June 1862, President Lincoln realized that there would be no early end to the war, and found himself "as inconsolable as it was possible for a human to be and yet live." Anxious for news from the army and needing to escape the constant interruptions at the White House, he frequently visited the telegraph office in the War Department building to await dispatches. It was during one such visit early in July that he asked the chief of the telegraph staff, Major Thomas Thompson Eckert, for some paper to "write something special," and began the first draft of the Emancipation Proclamation, completing it in a few weeks. Lincoln had long hoped to resolve the slavery issue through a congressional act of emancipation compensating slave owners for their loss of "property," but that approach was roundly rejected by representatives from the border states, leaving the President, who had decided upon the necessity of emancipation, with a presidential proclamation as the only option. The extraordinary document he conceived would announce the liberation on January 1, 1863 of all slaves in those states still in rebellion against the Union, and promised compensation to slave owners in those states that returned to the fold before that time if they adopted "immediate or gradual abolishment of slavery." This proclamation would be followed by a final proclamation issued on the 1st of January, identifying those states still in rebellion and confirming the liberation of all slaves therein. On Tuesday, July 22, Lincoln presented his draft to the Cabinet, telling them that he had resolved firmly upon the course of action it specified, and asking them not for advice but suggestions. The only observation he had not anticipated came from Secretary of State Seward, who proposed that it might be best to wait for a military victory before issuing the Proclamation, as it could otherwise seem like "the last measure of an exhausted government." Immediately recognizing the wisdom of the suggestion, Lincoln held back. On September 17, after an anxious wait of nearly two months, he received the victory he needed at the bloody Battle of Antietam. Completing his final draft, Lincoln presented it to his cabinet for refinement on September 22. Following the meeting, Seward took the amended draft with him to the State Department, where a formal, manuscript copy was made, then signed by Lincoln and Seward. The formal, official "Emancipation Proclamation" was, of course, issued on January 1, 1863, the day it became the law of the land. Written nine months after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect and only weeks after the Union victories at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, the letter captures the views of a Northern Democrat who supported… the war for preservation of the Union but regarded both emancipation and the expansion of executive power under Lincoln as unconstitutional departures from the principles of the Founding generation. After briefly discussing his health and employment as a bookkeeper at a steam mill, Rausern turns to politics, contrasting Illinois with Massachusetts and launching into a lengthy denunciation of abolitionists, whom he accuses of urging others into military service while themselves avoiding personal sacrifice: "We are not going to have a draft in Illinois this time, having an excess of 8,151 yet credited to us on the next if there should be another call. That is not a bad contrast for us by the side of the Abolition State of Massachusetts that has always howled, yet done but little fight. Abolition always did mean 40 miles from any fight. Look at the Cowardly Scoundrel of the New York Independent. Wanted a draft, and all men hung & quartered that was not in favor of said draft, 'But', what did he do, when drafted. Skulked and did not want to pay or fight. That is the way with Wendell Phillips, Owen Lovejoy, Wm. Lloyd Garrison & all of the ranting Abolitionists. When it comes to the test they want someone else to do the fighting." The letter articulates a position common among Northern War Democrats during 1863: support for military action against secession coupled with opposition to emancipation. Rausern writes: "I was in for the war and the Govt. until said Govt. made the Abolition Proclamation, then I said fight all of you Negro loving ones, I am not of that class. Some may say that it was a military necessity. That is all nonsense and no one that is well informed will say so. Previous to that the North was united, the South divided. Now vice versa." He continues with an extended constitutional critique of Lincoln's wartime policies, particularly the suspension of habeas corpus, arguing that "the President being the Executive, not the Legislative part of our Govt., has no right to do it", and that Congress could not delegate that power: "The old Fool thinks that it is a political necessity, not a military one. I am for the Constitution and the Govt. as it was left to us by our Revolutionary fathers and for it if needs be will sacrifice life & fortune for its defence & support." Rausern concludes by attacking the abolitionist leader Wendell Phillips, repeating contemporary accusations that Phillips had spent years seeking to undermine the Constitution and the Union itself: "But it looks gloomy when such men as Wendell Phillips is cited to as models of Patriots, that makes his boast that he has laboured 19 years to break up this Govt. and that the Constitution is a compact of death and in league with Devils. This is not idle talk, it is language that he used in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, and that Negro visaged Vice Pres't Hamlin cheered him when he said it. He repeated the same language in Cincinnati, Ohio and got rotten egged for his treasonable statements. The West is not of that kind, notwithstanding the cry of Copper-head of Abolition New England. We are for whipping Southern traitors and Northern Abolitionists, for they are alike guilty of treason." Overall the letter expresses Midwestern Democratic opposition to emancipation and wartime executive power, written from the home front as the political consensus that had initially sustained the Union war effort was fracturing. Historical BackgroundAs historian John Hope Franklin wrote, Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation "was a step toward the extension of the ideal of equality about which Jefferson had written" in the Declaration of Independence. Though controversial at first, in time, "the greatness of the document dawned upon the nation and the world. Gradually, it took its place with the great documents of human freedom."The Emancipation Proclamation was the single most important act of Lincoln's presidency. Russell (1822-1874) was born in Woodstock, New Hampshire. He became well-known as a professor of penmanship and a calligrapher, or "teacher of practical, plain & ornamental writing and drawing." He created lithograph broadsides of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Emancipation Proclamation. His 1856 Declaration of Independence print had a similar design with a standing George Washington in the central position.Peter Stephen Duval (ca. 1805-1886) was born in France and emigrated to Philadelphia in 1831 to work as a lithographer with the printing firm of Childs and Inman. By 1837, Duval had established his own lithographic printing shop, which he operated until his retirement in 1869. He became a naturalized citizen in 1841. He was the most prominent Philadelphia lithographer of the nineteenth century. By the mid-1840s, he was printing in colors, and he soon began to win awards for his chromolithography. At its height, Duval's firm operated nearly thirty presses and employed sixty to seventy artists, draftsmen, and workmen. In 1857, his son Stephen Duval joined the firm, then known as P.S. The Proclamation also encouraged the enlistment of black soldiers, who made a crucial contribution to the Union war effort. Moreover, England and France, who had already abolished slavery, were restrained from supporting the Confederacy, which would have been in their own economic interests. Lincoln summed up the Proclamation's importance in 1864: "no human power can subdue this rebellion without using the Emancipation lever as I have done."Nonetheless, the editors of the Journal of Commerce disagreed, and their opinion reflects the truly controversial nature of the act for many contemporary Americans.
