This compact selection of poems by Mary Elliott (1794-1870) includes a number of religious, moral, and sentimental poems, but is notable for the anti-slavery, egalitarian poem "The Negro and Her Master" on pp. 12-13.The book is in the original quarter-leather binding with the title in gilt on the spine, and paper-covered boards that were originally marbled, but are now so frayed at the edges and faded that the marbling is barely distinguishable. The frontispiece and title page are missing, and the book begins with the first poem, 'The Sunflower' on p.4. Internally pages are slightly wrinkled (probably due to damp at some stage) and a good deal.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and eight further charming engraved plates.Aiming to provide moral guidance and examples of good behaviour, this volume consists of eighteen short tales aimed at guiding the young in their development, with titles including 'Prudence without Meanness', 'Good - Not Best', and 'Penny Wise and Pound Foolish'.Undated; dated c1840 via Jisc and WorldCat. In a half morocco binding, with gilt detailing to back strip, and marbled paper covered boards. A touch of rubbing to back strip head and tail, otherwise externally lovely. Front hinge lightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages significantly age toned, with the odd spot. Very Good. book.

A translation into French of Elliott's Dumb Animals, this appears to be a variant to Darton, H396 which calls for a folding engraved frontispiece. Spine and corners slightly worn, a little marbled paper chipped off along board edges, rear endpaper removed, occasional very neat ink correction to error in French text, very little pencil scribble erased from a couple of margins, early inscriptions on endpapers, tiny chip to lower margin of 1 folding plate. The wood engraved covers (both upper and lower) are probably by the publisher William Darton II. This is a scarce copy of Mary Belson (Elliott)'s first work. Both William Darton senior and junior were pioneers in children's book publishing in England. Rare, COPAC locates just three copies of this edition at the BL, Cambridge and the V & A.
