Medvedev's somewhat uncommon second book, a critique from within of Soviet-style communism by a life-long Party member; it followed his highly important first book Let History Judge, a condemnation both of Stalin and of contemporary attempts within the Soviet Union to rehabilitate Stalin's image. Medvedev was expelled from the CPSU in 1969, but never left Russia, eventually rejoining the Party after the ascension of Boris Yeltsin in 1989.
