This sequal to John Elder's earlier book "The Letters and Journals of Samuel Marsden" is largely based on documents and records from the collection that became Dr Thomas Hocken's bequest to Otago University, which was instrumental in the publication of this title. (J…ohn Elder was Professor of History at Otago University.) The book explores the background to the establishment of the Church Missionary Society in NZ, in the second decade of the 1800s, with the document studies revealing much about the mission's relations with the Maori people, the difficulties encountered and problems created. A fascinatings study of the earliest days of European settlement in NZ. This is an ex-library copy of the 1934 limited first edition of 1000 copies, this being No 405 with Professor Elder's signature below that number on the title page verso. 280 pages including four appendices and index, colour art frontis, nine b/w plates including art, portraits, documents, three maps. Blue hard covers are VG with short overlay repair at spine top partially obscuring upper part of gilt spine title, light wear lower spine, FFEP has section cut from top corner. (7.5cm by 2cm deep), library stamp, donation label and card pocket below, library stamp with codes etc lower corner title page verso, through text block four small library stamps top page edges close to corner, apart from few creased corners text block otherwise excellent, having apparently spent much time in the library "stack." Original plain paper DJ has been backed with brown paper, is plastic protected, with a few chips and small pieces missing front corners, jacket taped to both pastedowns, crossed bar code lower front.
