Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. First ed; 196 p., clean and unmarked except for black marks through lovely calligraphic signature on front end page; b&w "decorations" by Fred J. Arting; binding firm; despite absence of d.j. the gilt lettering is still bright on unfaded brown boards that have only light bumping o corners and slight rubbing at crown and foot of spine panel. This story is African-American in the way that "Uncle Tom's Cabin" or "Amos and Andy" were, and was written by a white Kansas reformer remembered for her efforts towards women's suffrage. She tries to approximate dialect that could be considered in bad taste now.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Fred J. Arting Ilustrador. 1st Edition. "Aunt Liza's "Praisin' Gate" by Effie Graham is a scarce 1916 Kansas-set work centered around Aunt Liza, an elderly disabled woman who had once been enslaved in Tennessee and now lives in Kansas. Written in period Black dialect, the book reflects the racial, regional, and social attitudes of its time, while also giving Aunt Liza a memorable voice, presence, and moral center. The title refers to her "Praisin' Gate," marked by a handwritten sign, which becomes part of the book's character and charm. The story carries strong Americana and Kansas regional interest, with themes touching on formerly enslaved people building lives in the West, community life, faith, dignity, humor, and the changing social world of the early 20th century. It also includes references to the women's suffrage movement, adding another layer of historical interest. Effie Graham herself is noted by rare-book sellers as a Kansas-connected writer, suffragette, and mathematics teacher, and this book was published by A.C. McClurg & Co. in 1916 with decorations/illustrations by Fred J. Arting. More than a century later, this first edition has somehow held on to all of it: clean boards, an attractive dust jacket, charming Fred J. Arting decorations (illudtrations) throughout, and the unmistakable presence of a book that has watched the world change from the Wilson administration onward. 196 pages. . This copy presents beautifully for its age. The book is in fantastic shape, The Dust Jacket has some chipping on the top and the bottom of the spine but the binding is intact, and the interior is clean with no writing, markings, only light, age-appropriate toning is present. A wonderful piece for collectors of early Graham titles, vintage illustrated literature, and turn-of-the-century Americana. Please review the attached photos for full condition details. Ships carefully packaged.".

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a fascinating exploration of a unique historic community located in Kansas. The author, with an intimate knowledge of its history and people, presents an engaging account of a group of former slaves who built a community of their own, free from the constraints of the past. The author delves into the depths of the settlement's social and cultural tapestry, capturing the struggles and triumphs of its inhabitants. Central to the narrative is the "Hand-Made House," a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the community. The author skilfully weaves together the personal stories of the house's inhabitants with the broader narrative of a people striving to forge a new path. This book is more than just a historical account; it's a meditation on themes of freedom and community. The author explores the challenges faced by the freed slaves as they navigated a world that was often hostile and unwelcoming. The book also sheds light on the complexities of race relations in the United States, examining the ways in which social and economic factors shaped the lives of African Americans in the post-slavery era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
