This story is African-American in the way that "Uncle Tom's Cabin" or "Amos and Andy" were, and was written by a white Kansas reformer remembered for her efforts towards women's suffrage. She tries to approximate dialect that could be considered in bad taste now.

The title refers to her "Praisin' Gate," marked by a handwritten sign, which becomes part of the book's character and charm.
