Light rubbing and two small paper fragments from a label (?) to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities with wear to spine ends, front board beginning to separate but secure, rear joint starting at ends, corners bumped and somewhat worn, early owner bookplate (John Smith, Esq.) to front pastedown, rear hinge starting. After a brilliant military career in the West Indies, Colonel Despard was recalled from his command and dismissed on frivolous charges. He tried to clear his name and seek compensation, but his complaints led to imprisonment without a trial for two years. Financially ruined and bitter, he came to resent the establishment. He joined the radical London Corresponding Society and revolutionary United Irishman and took part in a plot to organize uprisings in London and Ireland. After the plot was foiled Despard and six others were convicted of treason. A highlight during the trial was Lord Admiral Nelson's testimony as a character witness on Despard's behalf. Despard and his co-conspirators share the dubious distinction of being the last men in Great Britain sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered, the form of execution given to convicted traitors since 1283. They itemize the cost of maintaining three of Despard's co-conspirators, including the key witness for the prosecution, Thomas Windsor, during their imprisonment before trial. The costs include buying a great coat, hiring coaches to tour the conspirator…s' meeting locations, and burying Windsor's child. Windsor was a soldier in the Guards who was asked by Despard to scout Tower Hill and discover how to take the Tower of London and its armoury. However, he was uncomfortable with the plan and delivered documents to an army agent, Mr Bownas, who advised him to gather more evidence for the trial. One manuscript is signed by George Lyell, a royal messenger to the Home Department, and one by John Revett (or Rivett), a constable at Bow Street who attended the 16 November raid. They both record broadly the same information: a total expenditure of £221 13s. 6d. for living costs alongside incidental expenses. Rivett itemizes the incidentals thoroughly, including "coach hire to Finsbury Square, White Chapel, Tower Hill and other places. to point out the various public houses where the seditious meetings were held" (£9 8s. 6d.). 2 bifolia, leaf size 305 x 392 mm, manuscript in multiple hands on 5 sides, with 2 blind-stamped receipt slips. Seated Britannia watermarks dated 1801. Sometime folded in four, a little soiled, creased at edges as expected, manuscript bright and legible: a very good collection.

One Peter Henry is required to remit 142 Jamaican pounds to James Hutchison, one of Despard's deputies, for "sundry necessaries supplied the poorer People at Convention Town". This included the construction of a house for a G…eorge Rayburn, described as a "poor Loyalist". As part of the treaties that ended the American Revolutionary War, Great Britain agreed that its settlers in Central America would move to demarcated areas. Despard was made Superintendent of the Bay of Honduras to oversee the evacuation of the British "Shoremen" from the Mosquito Coast. As many as 2,100 Shoremen were displaced and settled in places like Convention Town, established approximately 15 miles up the Belize River. However, power and wealth remained concentrated among the slave-owning class of "Baymen", leaving many of the Shoremen in poverty. Hutchinson's mission to Convention Town was conducted between 8 March and 4 May 1787. Items listed include grindstones, hoes, bushels of corn, "4 dozen Musketts", and "Muscovado Sugar for the use of the Sick". Despard was made infamous in 1802, when he was arrested and tried for conspiring to assassinate King George III. A little nicked and toned at extremities, otherwise bright: a very good example.
