Fanciful turn-of-the-century children's tale featuring siblings who refuse to go to sleep on Christmas Eve, until they are able to catch the Sand Man & fly away to the Land of Nod, where they encounter many marvelous creatures, delightfully illustrated here by Edward L. Chase. First published in 1909, this is the 1916 edition now with burgundy cloth-covered boards & the same brightly colored front paper pastedown as on the first edition. Octavo, in 136 pages, with a full-color frontispiece on glossy paper, 3 internal color plates, 2 pen-and-ink plates, + profuse other pen-and-ink sketches throughout. Condition is Good+/VG-: generally quite clean, completely unmarked save for old gift inscription in pencil to ffep (which we always leave intact). Light, random smudges throughout, mild foxing to plates. Binding strong & straight, but rear hinge is cracked. Exterior shows mild-moderate rubbing to extremities, bumping to both ends of spine & all corners, slight fraying to lower spine at rear joint.Colors bright, with light rubbing & creases to front pastedown.
