'Extraordinary collection by leading expert in Photomechanical printing. 1418 entries in first section and over 773 in the addenda' (Hanson Collection catalog, p. 145). 'In 1889, [Epstean] was employed at the electrotyping firm, Hopkins & Blaut where he established their photoengraving department in 1892. . . . In 1898, he partnered with H.L. Walker and founded the Walker Engraving Company. As Edward Epstean was working on Hopkins & Blaut's new photoengraving department, he also started a personal library to better understand the reproductive processes of photography. His library grew with the acquisitions of Stephen H. Horgan, William Gamble, Josef Maria Eder, and Gabriel Cromer. In 1934, The Epstean Collection was incorporated in The Columbia University Library with the help of curator Hellmut Lehmann-Haupt. Epstean viewed the collection as a work-in-progress and added to the collection and helped to secure funds for new acquisitions' (Wikipedia).

Some of the special topics include Photography on Metal - Niepce and Daguerre; Negative-Positive Method - Talbot; Negatives and Emulsions on Glass; Architectural Photography; First Textbooks; Early Photographic Societies; etc. Stenger provides excellent bibliographic references on early photography and the paths of technical developments. Erich Stenger (1878- 1957) was a German photochemist, collector, and avid historian and theorist of photography. From 1919 to 1922, he held the position of lecturer. He was the inventor of the darkroom lamp utilizing liquid filters (1905) and of a photographic copying process based on chemical gradation (1922). From 1922, he served as a non-tenured associate professor and Director of the Institute for Applied Photochemistry at the Technical University of Berlin. From 1928 onwards, he also continued his work in Berlin as a library councilor and head of the documents and portrait collection at the Prussian State Library. Stenger was a collector from childhood; initially, Liebig trading cards and postage stamps, then from 1906 until the end of his life, he collected photographs and artifacts documenting the cultural history of photography. His photographic collection was later regarded as the largest private collection of photographs in the world and served as the basis for numerous publications and exhibitionsincluding this book Photography in Culture and Technology. In 1955, Stenger sold his photography collection to Agfa, as the company sought to open a museum of photography. Stenger's photography collection now forms part of the Photography Collection at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne.
