He is best known for his anatomical atlas, Topographische Anatomie des Menschen (translated as Atlas of Topographical and Applied Human Anatomy. The Pernkopf atlas or just Pernkopf, has been prepared by Pernkopf and four artists over a 20-year period. While it is considered a scientific and artistic masterpiece, with many of its color plates reprinted in other publications and textbooks, it has been in recent years found that Pernkopf and the artists working for him, all of them ardent Nazis, used executed political prisoners, jews and other victims of the Nazi-regime as their subjects. Dr Sabine Hildebrandt, from Harvard Medical School, says at least half of the 800 images in the atlas came from political prisoners. It is richer in detail and more vivid in colour than any other. Skin, muscle, tendons, nerves, organs and bone are revealed in graphic detail. It's not for the faint-hearted. Pernkopf worked 18-hour days dissecting corpses, while a team of artists created images for his book. And I said to her, if this is going to heal this person and give them their life back, then there is no question that the atlas can be used."
