The magazine, operated by the three Stephens Brothers, and patterened on England's 'Punch', ran from Dec 31, 1859 to mid-1863. The Stephen Brothers were War Democrats who supported the Union but who were anti-abolition with little sympathy for blacks. This issue, along with many others in stock, was disbound from a defective and incomplete volume. 12 pages, illustrated with satirical and humorous cartoons. Lots of Civil War content. Front page cartoon/illustration shows Secretary of War Edwin Stanton as a Roman emperor, dressing him in a tunic and changing his signature to "Stantonius" - 'The Great [In]Censor of the Public Press'. [ An incensor is one who stirs up anger]. A full-page cartoon in the same issue, with plain reverse, shows General McClellan with sword attacking an alligator identified as 'Secession'. The magazine is very bright and clean. Spine a little ragged where disbound. Postage within North America - $8.00. Size: 8.25' x 11.25". Magazine.

Shows an unnatractive figure of a Southern Black wanting to visit Horace Greeley. 'The Highly Intelligent Contraband. pp197-208. Lots of Civil War content. This is an Original, complete issue of 16 pages dated August 31, 1867 -- Vol. 11, No. 557 -- Profusely illustrated with wood cut engravings -- Covers and contents are tight, very nice condition -- The Front Cover has a large engraving titled "The American Life Raft 'Nonpareil', Which Recently Crossed The Atlantic" -- Page 546 has a VERY INTERESTING article titled "A Desperate Man", referring to the possible impeachment of President Andrew Johnson, which did occur in 1868 -- Page 548 has nine engravings accompanying an article titled "The Adirondack Mountains", the engravings titled as follows: "Old Bridge At Meacham Outlet", "The Falls From Bartlett's Bridge", "Looking Up The Lake", "John Brown's House", "Corey's Hotel At Indian Carry", "John Brown's Grave", "Harrietstown, New York", "Big Clear Pond", and "Indian Carry, On The Upper Saranac" -- Page 549 has an engraving titled "Boring For Foundations For The New York And Brooklyn Suspension Bridge" -- Page 552 has a full page engraving titled "The Sailors' Snug Harbor, Staten Island, New York--The Home For Disabled Seamen" -- Page 553 has a lovely full page engraving by Frank Bellew titled " 'Hide And Seek'--An Illustration For The Juveniles" -- Page 556 has two large engravings, one titled "Queen Victoria And Prince Albert At The Time Of Their Marriage", the other "Gathering Pond Lilies" -- Page 557 has several engravings accompanying an article titled "The Latest Paris Fashions" -- This issue contains the following serials: "Birds Of Prey" Chapter IV, "Playing For High Stakes" by Miss Annie Thomas, Chapter XXIV & XXV, and "Mabel's Progress" Chapter III & IV -- Many articles related to these engravings and other events occurring at the time, as well as very interesting advertising -- We store and ship each Harper's Weekly issue in a large zip lock plastic sleeve with a board insert for stiffness.
