Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. xl, 136, [139] pages of plates : illustrations (some colour), plates (of the original Hindustani manuscript) ; 25 cm. The autobiography of Shaikh Muhammad Abdullah Khan 'Azar', a Kati from the Bashgal Valley in Afghanistan, was written in 1908, in exile in India, after a long period of service with the colonial rulers. In his account, Azar recollects the laws, customs, religion and history of his people, and adds his own life story. It is the only insider account of the Katis as they lived before their subjugation and conversion by Amir Abdur Rahman Khan in 1895-96, as well as an account of the Amir's campaign; and a rare description of his English masters by a colonial subject, at a time when the British Empire was at the height of its power. This book has been long in the making. Georg Morgenstierne bought the Urdu manuscript from Abdullah Khan in 1929, and began the work of transcription and translation. Knut Kristiansen did the bulk of transcription and translation after Morgenstierne's death in 1978. Following Kristiansen's death in 1999, the torch was passed to Ruth Laila Schmidt, who asked the noted expert on Nuristan and Chitral, Alberto Cacopardo, to prepare a detailed commentary on the manuscript, with a bibliography. Knut Kristiansen researched and lectured in modern Indian languages at the University of Oslo. Ruth Laila Schmidt is professor of Urdu at the University of Oslo, and has done research in Urdu and the Dardic language Shina. Alberto Cacopardo is a member of the Istituto Italiano per l'Africa e l'Oriente and has done anthropological research on the cultures of the Hindukush.

There were three deluxe copies marked as A, B, and C; There were 25 copies numbered 26 to 50 for the Catalan edition. This is a powerful and ever relevant history of the development and evolution of the concept and adoption of the tenets of freedom of the press. "The French Revolution led to modern democracy. Terms like left-wing and right-wing, revolutionary and counter-revolutionary movements, freedom, censorship, and silencing intellectual discourse were introduced and remain relevant. The texts of Condorcet (1776) and Bonald (1826) allow us to comprehend the debate that occurred in those times. Historian Albert Corbeto provides a background for the facts and contrasts them, recounting from a neutral standpoint the historical events that had a substantial impact on French and European society. There are many parallels between the past and present controversies. In today's geopolitically volatile world, there is a renewed and disturbing discussion about the nature and limits of various liberties, including freedom of the press. The French Revolution led to modern democracy. Terms like left-wing and right-wing, revolutionary and counter-revolutionary movements, freedom, censorship, and silencing intellectual discourse were introduced and remain relevant." [Stanford University Library] Albert Corbeto is a professor of Typography and Book History in the Postgraduate degree on Advanced Typography and Typographic creation in Design Degree. He is in charge of publishing and other cultural activities at the Reial Academia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona, and also cooperates with the Associació de Bibliòfils de Barcelona. He has published several articles and monographs on Spanish typography as well as on other aspects of printing and book history. The illustrator Elies Plana is a Barcelona based book artist and printer who has been working in the field for the last 15 years. After studying fine arts at the art school of Olot, he joined the workshop of his father, Miquel Plana. He learned the craft and the different techniques by helping and assisting his father in the production of over 100 fine books.
