Reissue of the 1907 edition, with a substantial new preface by the editor giving much of interest on "recent results of the labours and researches of admirers of Johnson." This is an important edition as it contains 576 illustrations, facsimiles, and maps, including 13 plates in photogravure. The (London) Times reviewer stated: "The raison d'etre of this edition is its illustrations. Of these there are portraits from authentic originals, views from old prints, autographs, facsimile title-pages. a series of views of Johnson's old haunts. Mr. Ingpen's literary contribution consists of short notes to the pictures, and his industry in collecting illustrative material." From another review: "The appearance of a new edition of the greatest biography in the English language is a literary event of some consequence. The idea. has been to annotate the work with illustrations, each picture being supplied with a full descriptive note. The portraits are those of practically all the men and women of note in literature in Johnson's day, and many of those who were famous in art, drama, and social life. Some of these, it should be said, are now reproduced for the first time." Uniformly bound in the original tan cloth, stamped in bright gold over black spine labels. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. Quarto, 2 volumes; 1172pp. (all), illustrated. A fine, fresh, handsome set, bound by Bayntun (naturally, and yes, the binding is signed) in 3/4 deep navy morocco and blue cloth, with raised bands, gilt compartments and spine titles, marbled endpapers, and top edge gilt. Slightest rubbing to extremities, but a very nice set. Supremely attractive set of this well-illustrated edition of perhaps the greatest biography ever written. A contemporary inscription on a front blank in volume I notes how scarce the book was in the open market, even within a year of publication, and how lucky he was to have been able to buy it. He seems to have written this note to himself, as his ownership inscription also appears in the second volume.
