Volume 19 smells old, but not objectionably so. This pair of bound volumes -…- half leather over Dutch-marbled, paper-covered boards -- have similar bindings, but are not an exact matched pair. Volume 19 has plain endpapers; Vol. XX has marbled endpapers to match its boards. Volume 19 includes Numbers 451-476, Volume XX Numbers 477-501 of the weekly journal, founded and edited by Charles Dickens. The first volume contains the first two-thirds (23 installments, Jan. 4 through June 6, 1868), and the second volume the final third of Wilkie Collins' "The Moonstone" in the numbers of June 13 through Aug. 8, 1868, this serialization comprising the first complete publication of this celebrated classic of detective/mystery fiction. These are the final two volumes in the "old series" of the weekly literary magazine before Dickens instituted his "New Series," the announcement for which appears on the final page of Volume XX. T. S. Eliot called "The Moonstone . . . the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels in a genre invented by Collins and not by Poe." Dorothy Sayers praised it as "probably the very finest detective story ever written." Franklin Blake, the gifted amateur, is an early example of the gentleman detective, while the novel has also been described as perhaps the earliest police procedural, due to the portrayal of the highly competent Sergeant Cuff, the London policeman called in from Scotland Yard (whom Collins based on the real-life Inspector Jonathan Whicher, who solved the Constance Kent murder.) "The Moonstone," representing Collins' only complete reprisal of the popular "multi-narration" method he'd previously utilized in "The Woman in White," was first published in book form later in 1868 by Tinsley Brothers, London, that triple-decker now frequently fetching $4,000. Some scattered foxing to preliminary and final pages. (Page edges of Vol. XX are marbled, while page edges of Vol. 19 are plain, with faded burgundy topstain. Dutch marbling to boards and endpapers, while bright and attractive, appears to be a printed pattern.) This pair of bound volumes of the magazine -- containing the first complete appearance in print of Wilkie Collins' pioneer mystery "The Moonstone" -- now reduced from $1,700.

Clark "Doc" Savage, Jr. was trained from birth with a rigorous regimen resulting in extraordinary strength and intelligence. He never killed unless ne…cessary, he had scientific gadgets, a headquarters and a secret base (a fortress of solitude). The stories combined mystery, adventure and some science fiction. He also had a team of five experts in various fields to assist in his adventures. His stories were extremely popular during the pulp era and then found a new audience in the 1960s-70s when the series was reprinted in paperback. The novels were written using the house pseudonym of Kenneth Robeson, the main author was Lester Dent who wrote nearly 80% of the novels. Other author contributors as Robeson included William Bogart, Alan Hathway, Harold Davis, Laurence Donovan and W. Ryerson Johnson. There were many excellent contributors to the short stories which rounded out the magazine with authors such as Steve Fisher, E. Hoffman Price, Q. Patrick, John D. MacDonald, Bruno Fischer, Frank Herbert, William Lindsay Gresham, to name a few. Street and Smith publishing executive Henry Ralston and editor John Nanovic established the initial idea for Clark "Doc" Savage, Jr. - .a brawny 'superman,' a master of many fields-surgeon, mineralogist, engineer, inventor, linguist. His skin was a glowing bronze.his hair was a matching hue, and so too his eyes, resembling gold flake. He would be known as the Man of Bronze."- Server, Encyclopedia of Pulp Fiction Writers, p.81. "Doc Savage was intended to be an adventure character, but under Lester Dent's imaginative manipulations he became something more - the first superhero and an inspiration for countless pulp, comic-book, and television characters." - Cook, Mystery, Detective and Espionage Magazines, pp. 521-527. THE IDLER was one of the popular magazines that sprang… up in the early 1890s, along with several others including THE STRAND MAGAZINE and PEARSON'S MAGAZINE, capitalizing on a confluence of favorable trends: the advent of cheap, high-quality printing in the late 1880s courtesy of the Linotype machine; widespread literacy in England courtesy of the National Education Bill of 1870; the emergence in the late 1880s of vibrant new authors (Kipling, Haggard, Doyle, etc.) and popular fiction genres (the detective story, the lost race romance, etc.); plentiful advertising revenues due to the lack of serious competition from any other medium; and a general economic background of prosperity during the glow of the late Victorian period. THE IDLER was founded by Robert Barr, a Scot who grew up in Canada and established himself as a journalist in the U.S. (Detroit) before returning to Great Britain. His business partner was William Dunkerley (a.k.a. John Oxenham). They wanted a "name" writer to act as the principal editor; after considering Twain, Barrie and Kipling, they settled on Jerome K. Jerome, then riding a crest with the success of his humorous THREE MEN IN A BOAT. The idea may have been to have Jerome act as a figurehead, but he dove enthusiastically into his editorial duties and his competitive/collaborative relationship with Barr led to a fruitful ferment in the magazine's pages. As a writer (like W. W. Jacobs and Barry Pain, who were also frequent contributors to the magazine), Jerome was known principally for humor but he also wrote significant amounts of very good horror and supernatural material. Barr himself was another versatile author of popular fiction (working mainly in the adventure and mystery genres). Both men contributed material as well as editorial guidance to THE IDLER, and they were joined by some of the leading fiction writers of the period: Robert Louis Stevenson, A. Conan Doyle, Israel Zangwill, Marie Corelli, Grant Allen, Anthony Hope, Eden Phillpotts and W. L. Alden. The fiction, which tended towards the generic and sensational, was balanced by articles and essays, some serious, some playful. Lively artwork and layouts acted as a leavening for the whole. The magazine was profitable from the start and had a good run, ending in 1911. Jerome and Barr were among the last in the Victorian tradition of author-editors, a tradition that included Charles Dickens, Margaret Oliphant, Mary Braddon and (in the U.S.) William Dean Howells and Bret Harte.
