PIpes was a prominent Oregon attorney, a justice on the Oregon Supreme Court, and a patron of literature. Pipes moved to Oregon around the same time as Simpson. Vera Simpson was a family member of Simpson, probably his daughter, Zilla Vera. Burney was a writer who wrote the preface.
