Those who live according to the Rule, which regulates daily life in a monastery; regard it as the bedrock of their lives and feel great affection for its writer, a monk whose humility and extraordinary insight into human nature are legendary The Rule has fascinated laypeople and monastics alike, including Buddhist monks and nuns who are intrigued by the similarities between their traditions and those of their Christian counterparts. Now, four prominent Buddhist scholars, Norman Fischer, a Zen priest and founder of the Everyday Zen Foundation; Joseph Goldstein, cofounder of the Insight Meditation Society; Judith Simmer~Brown, professor and chair of the Buddhist Studies Program at Naropa University; and Yifa, a nun at Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Taiwan and faculty member at National Sun Yat~Sen University, have turned their attention to this seminal text. The fruit of their discussion is Benedict's Dharma. Amis and Michie got to know each other as undergr…aduates in Oxford and quickly established a weekly routine of meeting outside the Radcliffe Camera to dissect each other's poems: "During what cannot have been more than five or six weeks I produced about the same number of poems . . . about half my average yearly output over my poetry-writing life. James produced about as many. Nothing like it has happened to me before or since." With characteristic youthful insouciance, they then turned up at Blackwell's bookshop and asked to be made co-editors of the 1949 issue - a wish that was granted. Contributors here include Elizabeth Jennings and John Bayley (later Warton Professor of English at Oxford and husband to novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch), who contributes three poems under the name Oliver Bayley.
