Paperback. Condición: Fine. 1st. viii, 276 pages, portrait; 22 cm. Reprint. Originally published: London : R. Hart-Davis, 1956. Tight, clean copy. *** "Between 1868 and 1897 Henry James wrote a number of short essays and reviews of artists and art collections; these essays were published in magazines such as Atlantic Monthly and Harper's Weekly and in newspapers such as the New York Tribune. They included James's comments on Ruskin, Turner, Whistler, Sargent, and the Impressionists, among many others. Thirty of these essays were collected and first published in a modern edition in 1956, accompanied by John Sweeney's introduction, which sketches James's interest in the visual arts over a period of years, focusing on the ways in which painting and painters entered his work as subjects. Susan Griffin's new forward places James's observations in a contemporary context. Some of the novelist's judgements will seem wrong to today's readers: he was critical of the Impressionists, for example. But all of these essays bear the stamp of James's critical intelligence, and they tell us a great deal about his development as a writer during those years." - Publisher. *** CONTENTS: An English critic of French painting, 1868; French pictures in Boston, 1872; Pictures by William Morris Hunt, Gerome and others, 1872; The Metropolitan Museum's '1871 purchase', 1872; The Wallace Collection in Bethnal Green, 1873; The Duke of Montpensier's pictures in Boston, 1874; On some pictures lately exhibited; Duveneck and Copley, 1875; The American purchase of Meissonier's 'Friedland', 1876; Two pictures by Delacroix; The impressionists, 1876; Les Mai^tres d'Autrefois, 1876; The National Gallery, 1877; The old masters at Burlington House, 1877; The picture season in London, 1877; The Norwich school; Ruskin's collection of drawings by Turner; The Grosvenor Gallery, 1878; The Royal Academy, 1878; On Whistler and Ruskin, 1878; On art-criticism and Whistler, 1879; The Royal Academy and the Grosvenor Gallery, 1879; The letters of Eugene Delacroix; London pictures, 1882; John S. Henry; illustrated by John Trotta; introduction by Harry Golden. Kansas City: Hallmark Editions, 1968. Hardcover in printed cloth boards patterned with antique newspaper advertisements, in matching illustrated dust jacket priced $2.50. A charming mid-century gift edition celebrating small-town Americana through wry, often tender selections from local newspapers across the United States. With sections on 'Life and Other Pleasures,' 'Love Before and After Marriage,' and 'The School of Experience,' the volume reflects the wit and neighborly humor of rural editors from the early 20th century onward. Illustrated throughout with Trotta's nostalgic cartoons in black, gray, and sepia tones. Jacket shows minor edgewear and a small closed tear at the upper front corner; book itself Near Fine, tight binding, clean pages, and beautifully preserved decorative endpapers. A delightful piece of literary Americana - part humor anthology, part cultural time capsule - produced during Hallmark's brief but high-quality publishing period of the late 1960s. Harry Golden (1902-1981) was a celebrated journalist and humorist best known for Only in America and his witty social commentary on American life. John M. Henry was an Iowa-based editor, radio speaker, and columnist for Cosmopolitan, recognized for collecting rural newspaper humor. John Trotta was a commercial illustrator active in the 1960s, whose clean line style and muted palette captured the genial tone of Golden's Americana. John Trotta (ilustrador).…

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good Plus. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good Plus. First Edition. 2008. ix, 513pp. "This newly edited version of John Henry Newman's Apologia Pro Vita Sua sheds new light on Newman's celebrated account of his passage from the Church of England to the Roman Catholic Church and repositions his narrative within the context of transformative religious journeys of other Victorian intellectuals. Drawing on extensive research in contemporary printed materials and archives, Turner's powerfully revisionist Introduction reevaluates and challenges the historical adequacy of previous interpretations of Newman's life and of the Apologia itself. He further presents Newman's volume as a response to ultramontane assertions of papal authority in the l860s." Minor rubbing to top of unclipped dust jacket and book spines. Both book and jacket are otherwise in excellent condition. All contents are tight and clean. There are no inscriptions. PLEASE NOTE: Heavyish book so a little extra may be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.…
