Apart from anything else, Stuart's death deprivesd his friends and colleages of the opportunity to contribute to the Festschift that he so richly deserved. With this partly in mind, I suggested to the Kent Archaeological Society, on whose Council and Publication Committee Stuart had served for many years, the publication of the present volume of essays dedicated to his memory.
