Añadir al carritoPictorial Wrappers. Condición: New. First Edition. 1st paperback printing, November 2018. Here are all eleven of his "Man Who Read" stories and seven of the Mr. Strangs. Includes a checklist of Brittain's mystery writings. It s been worth the wait. One of the authors most requested by Crippen & Landru readers throughout its 25-year history has been mystery writer William Brittain, whose fiction challenges the reader with tricky plots presented in a unique style. For the first time, all of the popular Man Who Read stories and a selection of the Mr. Strang stories have been collected into a single volume. Both series appeared in Ellery Queen s Mystery Magazine during the mid-years of the 20th century. Sadly, Brittain later forsook mystery fiction to become a children s author, and his YA novel The Wish Giver earned him a Newbery Honor award. This collection was edited by Josh Pachter, who also wrote the introduction and compiled a bibliography of Brittain s many publications. Book.

Some edge wear and slight creasing to top and bottom of jacket and spine, spine slightly faded, corners slightly bruised, not price clipped (no published price), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 448pp. Vera Brittain (1893-1970), won an exhibition to Somerville College, Oxford, in 1914, but a year later abandoned her studies to enlist as a VAD nurse. She served throughout the war, working in London, Malta and close to the Front in France. At the end of the war, with all of those closest to her dead, she returned to Oxford. Vera Brittain was a convinced pacifist, a prolific speaker, lecturer, journalist and writer, she devoted much of her energy to the causes of peace and feminism. She wrote 29 books in all, novels, poetry, biography and autobiography, but it was TESTAMENT OF YOUTH which established her reputation and made her one of the best loved writers of her time. This is her fascinating look at the 1930s.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION - FINE COPY IN A LIKE COMPLETE DUST JACKET : a very nice copy indeed. 448p., [8]p. of plates : ill. Summary: his poignant work collects letters written from 1913 to 1918 between Vera Brittain and four young men - her fiance Roland Leighton, her younger brother Edward, and their two close friends, Victor Richardson and Geoffrey Thurlow - who were killed in World War I. While this correspondence inspired Testament of Youth, Brittain's classic memoir of her wartime experiences, most of the letters are published here for the first time. Taken together, the letters present a remarkable and profoundly moving portrait of five idealistic youths caught up in the cataclysm of war. Spanning the duration of the war, the letters vividly convey the uncertainty, confusion, and almost unbearable suspense of the tumultuous war years. They offer both male and female perspectives and reveal important historical insights by allowing the reader to witness and understand the Great War from a variety of viewpoints: that of the soldier in the trenches, of the volunteer nurse in military hospitals, and even of the civilians on the home front. As World War I fades from living memory, these letters are a powerful and stirring testament to a generation forever shattered and haunted by grief, loss, and promise unfulfilled.

First edition limited to 1,000 copies of which this is copy No. 292. xvii, 76pp., a frontispiece portrait of Winifred Holtby and 8 other black and white illustrations. Winifred Holtby (1898-1935) was an English novelist and journalist. She is probably best known for her novel South Riding, which was posthumously published in 1936. After the First World War, she returned to study at the University of Oxford where she met Vera Brittain, a fellow student with whom she maintained a lifelong friendship. Holtby was, together with Brittain, an ardent feminist, socialist and pacifist. As well as her journalism, Holtby wrote 14 books, including six novels; two volumes of short stories; and the first critical study of Virginia Woolf. This selected bibliography of Winifred Holtby's writings also contains letters written to her governess and a foreword by Vera Brittain. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and bumping to the spine ends. The titling on the spine is worn. The contents are tight and clean with partial browning to the free endpapers. The front free endpaper has been flat signed by Vera Brittain. Signed by the author.
