Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fair. Both books are very clean copies. The jackets have shelf wear and closed tears. This two-volume work presents Captain Philip Carteret's account of his remarkable circumnavigation aboard HMS Swallow. After becoming separated from Samuel Wallis's Dolphin following their difficult passage through the Strait of Magellan, Carteret continued independently across the Pacific. Despite an ageing, poorly equipped ship and a crew increasingly affected by sickness, he explored little-known waters and recorded several important discoveries, including Pitcairn Island and the Carteret Islands. Based on Carteret's journals, letters and contemporary documents, the work provides a detailed first-hand record of Pacific exploration immediately before the voyages of Captain Cook.

8vo (22x14.5cm), hardback, xii + 273pp (vol I), 564pp in total. Bumped, foxed, a tad age-toned, Fold out maps, and illustrations. Pictures available on request. Based on Carteret's own journals, and supplemented by archival documents from England and Holland, this is an account of a journey to the South Seas in 1766 to look for the Southern Continent, where Carteret was second in command to Samuel Wallis. Hardcover. Condición: Fine. xvi, 96, [2] + 16 double-page color facsimile plates; large folio (24.5 x 16 in.), dark brown half morocco, tan cloth sides, t.e.g.; printed on thick paper. The plates are preceded by scholarly essays by Wallis, Janet Backhouse, and others providing history and background on Rotz and this atlas. Also included are a transcription and translation of the text. Jean Rotz (c. 1505-c. 1560), navigator of Dieppe and royal hydrographer, wrote and addressed this work to Henry VIII. In the text portion, Rotz provides what is essentially a manual of navigational instruction, including topics such as how to use the winds of the sea-compass and how to calculate latitude by observations of the sun. The atlas portion contains regional charts of the lands and sea coasts of the world, including America and the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean and Far East, the coasts of Asia and Africa, the Black Sea and Mediterranean, South America to the Strait of Magellan, and a world map in two hemispheres. A fine and fresh copy of an impressive production. Barker 244.
