Añadir al carritopaperback. Condición: Good. Klinker, Orpha Ilustrador. Bank of America, 1959. Paper cover, 48 pp. In good condition. Rose colored illustrated paper covers have light bumping to edges and corners and light overall scuffing with a bit of fraying to the corner tips. Binding tight (staple bound). Pages clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-library. NO Remainder Marks. Illustrations by Orpha Klinker. From Foreword: This is the life story of a great city told in new terms. What made Los Angeles a great city? From whence come the forces and the nourishment to transform it from wilderness to metropolis? In the mold of History, this was no ordinary fashioning. This was slumber metamorphosed into catapulting activity. This was a siesta gone wild. In these pages there emerges the image of the miracle that transpired. From the chronicle step forth the causes and the men bringing it about. No other city has such a story. Never has the story of this one been told in this manner.

Añadir al carritoWrappers. Condición: Good. Sunkist Growers, Published [No date: circa 1968]. Wraps, 54 pp.; 23 cm; illustrated with pen-and-ink drawings by Elgas Grim; black-and-white photographs. In Good condition. Olive yellow illustrated paper covers, staple bound, with mild bumping to edges, some color loss along edges, and scuffing and soiling to back cover. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked.Published by Sunkist Growers as a keepsake for the ninth joint meeting of the Roxburghe and Zamorano book collector clubs (1968), this charming pamphlet traces the history of citrus from its ancient origins in the East (where the orange was known as "Nagrunga" and the lemon as "Nimbu") through the courts of ancient Persia and Arabia, Moorish Spain, the California missions, and the founding of the cooperative marketing movement that became Sunkist. Written by Ed Ainsworth, longtime journalist for the Los Angeles Times, the text is illustrated throughout with decorative pen-and-ink drawings by Elgas Grim. A central "Citrus Pictorial History" section includes black-and-white photographs documenting early California citrus operations -- packing houses, orchards, and portraits of the Sunkist presidents. Concludes with a full double-page illustrated color map titled "The Western Pilgrimage of Citrus." This copy does not include the presentation bookplate found in some Roxburghe/Zamorano copies.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Some lovely anecdotes here about California, most of them arising from the author's long career with the LA Times where he started in 1923 and rose to become an editor and columnist. He covers such stories as the reality behind the Swallows of Capistrano, a celebration in Monterey, a trip along the El Camino Real, the lost city of Buena Vista Lake, and many other delightful and entertaining reminiscences. The front endpaper is boldly inscribed and signed by the author. Pale yellow cloth boards are very slightly marked, a little softening to spine ends, and a small bookseller's label to front pastedown (yes, yes, I mean it's the small label of a bookseller, not the label of a small bookseller!). A very good copy. Inscribed by Author(s).

Yellow cloth boards with blue lettering on front and spine show light bumping to edges and corners with light overall scuffing and soiling, and a small area of bubbling to the cloth on the front cover near the spine. Binding tight. Front free endpaper bears a personalized inscription signed by the author: "For Jon and Maggie, Best wishes, Ed," dated Christmas, 1948. California Jubilee was published in 1948 to celebrate the centennial of the California Gold Rush, the subtitle "Nuggets from Many Hidden Veins" reflecting its anthology nature. Ed Ainsworth, a veteran journalist and author who spent his career at the Los Angeles Times, drew on decades of reporting across the state to compile this collection of stories and reminiscences: the mystery of the Swallows of Capistrano, a celebration in Monterey, travels along the El Camino Real, the lost city of Buena Vista Lake, and many other episodes from California history and lore.
