Stewart briefly reviews the history and genealogy of the Anderson family beginning with Annette McConnell Anderson and George Walter Anderson, the family's early affiliations with Newcomb College and Tulane University faculty such as Ellsworth Woodward, Joseph Meyer, Paul Cox, and William Spratling as well as connections to George Ohr and Alfred University. The initial sections focus upon the work of brothers Peter Anderson, Walter Anderson, and James McConnell Anderson with numerous pictures of rare pieces owned by Anderson family members, private collectors, and museums. Also reviewed are examples of the wares and glaze decorations by the talented children and grandchildren of the three brothers: Patricia Anderson Findeisen, Adele Anderson Lawton, James Anderson, Michael Anderson, Christopher Inglis Stebly, and Peter Wade Anderson. Furthermore, Stewart greatly expands upon the pottery marks documented by Christopher Maurer in DREAMING IN CLAY ON THE COAST OF MISSISSIPPI (Doubleday, 2000), as he examines the identification, dating, and attribution of Shearwater wares in-depth with color photos of pottery bases showing almost all known incised and/or stamped thrower and decorator ciphers.
