More importantly, he has some hilariously off-the-wall tales to tell. Often including hiding fish in the Chief Whip's briefcase. Earl Ferrers writes amusingly and movingly about his twelve predecessors, one of whom was hanged after he shot his manservant. His at times hilarious accounts of his careers in farming, business and politics have the reader crying tears of both joy and sadness as he relates the bizarre events in his political life, and some of his family tragedies. When his fellow members of the House of Lords voted which 92 hereditary peers to keep, Earl Ferrers topped the vote. Reading this book, it is easy to see why. Originally compiled to serve both as a legal reference and a vehicle of political discourse, the State Trials series shaped contemporary and subsequent understanding of justice, authority, and dissent. The generously sized sheets on which these trials are printed offer particular pleasure to the eye and hand, bearing clear signs of their handmade origin: chain lines and wire impressions from the mould are readily visible, some pages display watermarks, and the paper varies subtly in thickness, all characteristic of 18th century rag paper. Stab-stitched pamphlet in self-wrappers, thread perished, edges untrimmed. Light toning, light soiling to exterior, horizontal fold line, some faint creasing to spine and final leaf. A very good copy in its original state. $250. * Only edition, one of two issues from the same year (the other published in Dublin by Faulkner). Lord Ferrers was apparently a pleasant man, if arrogant, when sober, but prone to violent rages and brutality while drunk. After six years of abuse, his wife left him and returned to her family. She applied to Parliament for, and received, an order for maintenance. This came from a separate trust administered by Ferrers's steward, John Johnson. The Earl eventually convinced himself that Johnson was plotting against him, stealing his money and having an affair with his estranged wife. During a meeting he ordered Johnson to kneel and to beg pardon. Ferrers shot Johnson when he complied with this order. As established at trial, Ferrers had been sober when he shot Johnson, but quickly took to the bottle and assaulted the wounded man again. Johnson eventually died. Ferrers employed an insanity defense but was unsuccessful. He was sentenced to be hanged and anatomized, the last peer to be executed in this manner.
