Instructed to demand fifty million francs, Barbe-Marbois, with tight-fisted French thrift, asked one hundred million francs. The transaction was a horse trade, and the United States paid eighty million. The first full-length biography of this Frenchman who served various sovereigns and governments of France, and corresponded with many of the founding fathers of the new American republic, he married the daughter of a governor of Pennsylvania and eventually became minister of the public treasury under Napoleon. He considered the Louisiana transaction to be the greatest event of his long career. Size: 8vo - 8" - 9" Tall.
