The transaction was a horse trade, and the United States paid eighty million. The first full-length biography of this Frenchman who served various sovereigns and governments of France, and corresponded with many of the founding fathers of the new American republic, he married the daughter of a governor of Pennsylvania and eventually became minister of the public treasury under Napoleon.
