Large, older (but likely not contemporary) Brooklyn bookstore stamp on front fly. Binding worn and soiled with loss at the spine ends, endleaves foxed and some very occasional modest foxing in the t…ext, margins toned, and a very small foredge stain affecting the foredge margins only a trifling bit, a sound, good only copy. The author's attempt to refute Harriet Beecher Stowe's *Uncle Tom's Cabin*, with chapters titled "Inconsistencies and Improbabilities of the Story" and "Irreligious Tendency of the Work," along with more general chapter headings dealing with the slave trade, conditions in Africa, religion, etc. The author, thoroughly salty over the publication and success of *Uncle Tom's Cabin*, writes that while he has "throughout endeavoured to treat [Stowe] with the respect due to a woman, I have occasionally found it hard work. ." According to him, Stowe's book "stirred up more bad bile in twelve months, than can be settled in as many years." The author was formerly a professor at St. John's College, Maryland. Ignorant; relatively uncommon.

All told, the volumes are clean and well kept. From the home of a well regarded historian of Black studies. Also was a tobacco smoker, and that combined with age has led to occasional toning… / darkening of the tan cloth part of these hardcover volumes - though without any consistency, it is present to some degree on nearly all. Faint odor as well, especially for those of sensitive nose, though to this seller it is not egregious. Besides that, the condition is pretty solid on all. Binding are all quite strong, sturdy, tight , square. No markings were found in any of the books, and no other damage to interiors at all. One volume has some fraying to the edge of the cloth of the front, and some of the volumes have lesser or greater degrees of rubbing, scuffing, dustsoiling, but all told clean beyond the toning.
