Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fair. 1st Edition. Caxton Printers, Caldwell, Idaho. 1944. 232 pages. First edition, first printing with the requisite 1944 date on the title page, and no later printings noted on the copyright page. Book is tight. Binding and hinges are strong and sound. Red cloth illustrated and stamped in black. Illustrated endpapers. Small paper scuff on FFEP. The blank page facing the last page of the Index, in the rear of the book has a USO Club stamp, from Alder Street, Walla Walla, Washington. Interestingly, when this book was published in 1944, during WWII, Walla Walla had two segregated USO's, one for black soldiers, and one for white soldiers. The Alder street USO catered to the white soldiers and their families, before ultimately catching fire. As for the rare original DJ, $5.00 price is still intact on flap. The rare DJ, sadly, has a large swath of its front absent. The cheap paper used at the time, thanks to war rations, explains why the majority of these DJ's have crumbled away and are so rare. Fortunately, however, the face of Burbank's now classic portrait of Geronimo still graces the front of the DJ. As for the author, Elbridge Ayer Burbank (April 10, 1858 - March 21, 1949) was a classically trained American artist who sketched and painted more than 1200 portraits of Native Americans from over 125 tribes. Among them are the Navajo, Cheyenne, Sioux, Apache, Hopi, and Osage. Additionally, Burbank is believed to be the only person to paint legendary Apache war chief, Geronimo, from an in-person sitting. From an ethnographic standpoint, this book offers a rare glimpse into the lives of Native Americans as observed by a non-Native artist during a pivotal era in American history. A remarkable chronicle of a disappearing culture, its people and their customs. Text is filled with portraits and sketches of American Indian Chiefs. VG+/Fair.
