First edition of what is considered one of most original works on natural philosophy, the only published book by Agostino Doni (c1550-c1590), who describes himself as physician and philosopher from Cosenza (in Calabria); he is thought to have studied philosophy at Padua or Ferrara. In the first part of his part of his work Doni totally rejects the theories of Plato, Aristotle, Hippocrates and Galen; in the definitive second part he confines his investigation of human nature to those substances which can be perceived by the senses; the core of his new philosophy ('sunt species hominis') defines a human being as a single living body able to perform thoughts and actions. The lengthy dedication is to Stephen Bathory, King of Poland, protector of Italian radical freethinkers at his court at Cracow. The book was published in Basel, known for religious tolerance and liberty of spirit, where the author had arrived in 1579 as a refugee from the Italian inquisition, branded a heretic. He was supported by Basil Amerbach, rector of the university and by the physician Theodor Zwinger who introduced him to the printer Froben. Doni was a critic of Bernardino Telesio (1509-88), his celebrated fellow Calabrian, whose own 'De rerum natura' was published in 1586; both were natives of Cosenza. Doni's iatrochemical system was denigrated by Francis Bacon as 'pastoral philosophy'. Ironically Bacon considered him a pupil of Telesio (cf De dignitate et augmentis scientiarum IV,3). Doni later travelled to Geneva and Cracow to promote Italian naturalist thinking.
