Covering 60 years of merciless bloody conflict, it documents in infinite detail every major engagement ever fought in the West between the white men and Indians. An epic study of the savage struggle to carve an empire out of the wilderness and a grim commentary on the white man's treatment of the original Americans, MASSACRES OF THE MOUNTAINS, in 672 fascinating pages, chronicles the difficulties behind the battles, why and where ~ and by whom ~ the first shots were fired, and the final results. According to General George Crook, "Greed and avarice on the part of the whites ~ in other words, the almighty dollar ~ is at the bottom of nine~tenths of all our Indian troubles." Mr. Dunn explains why Crook made this statement, and why all of the other great fighting generals tried to intercede in favor of the Indians they had been ordered to annihilate. He also details the inhuman conditions under which the Indians were forced to live as a result of subjugation by the white men . the way the Piegans ate bark from trees in an effort to stay alive, the way the Nez Perce were scalped and their women raped while they themselves fought humanely, the way the Cheyennes were slaughtered without provocation. Astonishingly alive, MASSACRES OF THE MOUNTAINS is an absolute must for every library, historian, and serious student of the Far West. Virtually unobtainable at any price for more than 70 years, this handsome unexpurgated volume should be read by every American who has any interest at all in the history of his country. About the author: Jacob Piatt Dunn was Secretary of the Indiana Historical Society in 1886, State Librarian between 1889 and 1893, editorial writer for the Indianapolis Sentinel between 1889 and 1904, Indianapolis City Comptroller between 1904 and 1906 and again from 1914 to 1916, and Private Secretary to Senator S. M. Ralston in 1923.
