Hardcover. Condición: Good. A monograph about architecture with particular reference to San Xavier, illustrated with photographs throughout. This copy also has numerous kodak photographs of San Xavier or other relevant mission architecture tipped-in or laid-in by a previous owner, Mary B. Kilpatrick. Most of her photos Mrs. Kilpatrick captioned or wrote details on the back; several are dated 1926. The quality of the paper used in the book is such that the glue attaching the photographs has not created bleedthrough staining, although there is a slight wave to some glue sites, and some of the photos do have faint glue discoloration at the relevant margins. The overall effect is obtrusive but not uncharming, like reading the book with a previous owner who really enjoyed the subject (and/or believed the illustration insufficient). Brown cloth with gold titling and decoration, with light shelf-wear, gilt sharp and bright. Spine square. Binding sound. Pages lightly toned; photos glued in intermittently as described, and there are two small newsclippings of poetry (Amy Bruner Almy's 'Where the Mesquite Grows' and Charles Beghtol's 'In Old Tuscon') attached at front paste down. Previous owner's name, and additional photograph attribution, written to title page. …

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the captivating world of mission architecture, a unique style that emerged from the confluence of Spanish, Mexican, and indigenous influences in the American Southwest. The author takes the reader on a journey through the historical development of the mission style, tracing its roots back to the Romanesque and Byzantine periods in Europe and highlighting the impact of Moorish influences that were brought to Spain and later to Mexico. The book then explores the unique conditions of the Southwest that shaped the mission style, including the availability of materials, the challenges posed by the climate and the relationship between the missionaries and the indigenous peoples. The author then focuses on the mission of San Xavier del Bac in Arizona, considered by many to be the finest example of mission architecture. Through detailed descriptions and historical analysis, the book illuminates the design, construction and symbolism of San Xavier del Bac, providing insights into the lives and beliefs of the missionaries and the indigenous peoples they sought to convert. The reader will gain a rich understanding of the artistic and cultural significance of this remarkable building, a powerful symbol of faith and resilience in the harsh landscape of the Southwest. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
