This publication offers a perspective of the state of the art of engraving in the decade before the announcement of the invention of the daguerreotype. Included is a.o. the the beautiful engraving of Marie-Guillemine Benoist's famous painting 'Négresse' (1800), drawn and engraved in 1829 by the French artist Polydore Pauquet (1800 - 1879). Also included in this work is an engraving after Louis Daguerre's painting, Chapelle des Feuillants (1814) by Augustin-Francois Lemaître.
