Soft cover. Condición: New. This version translated by W. H. Drew and John Lazarus is a definitive work that presents the timeless wisdom of the Thirukkural, a classic Tamil text composed by Thiruvalluvar. The Thirukkural, often referred to simply as the Kural, is a revered Tamil text comprising 1,330 concise couplets, known as…kurals, each composed of seven words. Divided into three books, it imparts timeless wisdom on virtue, wealth, and love through aphorisms. Renowned for its universal appeal and secular ethos, the Kural transcends cultural boundaries, offering profound insights into human values and relationships. Its brevity and clarity have made it a cherished philosophical and ethical guide, influencing generations across the globe. This book offers the complete text in its original Tamil along with a meticulous English translation, making the profound teachings accessible to a wider audience. Drew and Lazarus, with their scholarly expertise, provide insightful interpretations that capture the essence of Thiruvalluvar's ethical and philosophical insights. This bilingual edition not only serves as a bridge for non-Tamil readers to appreciate the depth of Thirukkural but also preserves the linguistic and cultural richness of Tamil literature for future generations.

Paperback. Condición: New. Language: English. About the Book:-Through this rare work, the author has explored new avenues. A standard work of Tamil aphorisms and instruction that they believed, if followed truly, will bring them happiness. The Tirukkural (literally Sacred Verses), or shortly the Kural, is a classic Tamil languag…e text, considered one of the greatest works on ethics and morality, it is known for its universality and secular nature. Its authorship is traditionally attributed to Valluvar, also known in full as Thiruvalluvar, born 30 BC, and was a weaver by profession. The Kural is traditionally praised with epithets and alternate titles such as 'the Tamil Veda' and 'the divine book.' It emphasizes non-violence and moral vegetarianism as virtues for an individual. The book contains 133 chapters and each chapter deals with a different theme with advice. The chapters have 10 aphorisms each and they, among others, offer advice on self-control, on the fear of sin, securing the friendship of great men, against idleness, on false friendship, on abstaining from drink, on modesty etc. The book is the product of the extensive study of Tamil language. The subject matter of the book is illuminating and delicate which makes this discourse an indispensable one and immensely good for common readers. About the Authors:-William Henry Drew was a 19th-century Christian missionary to India who rendered the Tirukkural into English. However, he translated only the first 630 couplets of the Tirukkural. He rendered the Tirukkural into English in prose form and first published it in 1840. Of the 133 chapters of the Kural text, he translated only the first 63 chapters. The first edition also included the original Tamil text, Parimelazhagar's commentary, Ramanuja Kavirayar's amplification of the commentary, in addition to Drew's English prose renderings. Drew's rendering closely followed the commentary of Parimelalakar and thus almost remained close to the original work of Valluvar. The Title 'Thirukkural written/authored/edited by W. H. Drew, John Lazarus', published in the year 2020. The ISBN 9788121240994 is assigned to the Paperback version of this title. This book has total of pp. 304 (Pages). The publisher of this title is Gyan Publishing House. This Book is in English. The subject of this book is History. Size of the book is 13.34 x 21.59 cms Vol: 304.

hardcover. Condición: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that… encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
