Condición: Very Good. 8vo; 163 pages; Contemporary red half morocco over red pebbled cloth, five raised bands on spine -- title lettered in gilt directly in the second and third spine panels. Marbled endpapers, original front and rear printed wrappers bound in at the end. Minor wear and rubbing to the binding. A mid-nineteenth century engraved bookplate: "Surgeon General's Office Library" is mounted to the front paste-down endpaper -- this bookplate is overstamped in ink: "Withdrawn / Nat. Lib. of Med." Title page has an oval stamped ex libris of the Surgeon General's Office, along with brief pencil markings in black, blue and red. No other marks on either the binding or the text. Meyer's treatise on the relationship between pathological conditions and processes in the sexual organs of women and mental disorders certainly raises interesting questions considered from the viewpoint of modern clinical or theoretical practice. OCLC Number 444013715. An interesting survivor of the time when the U.S. national collection of medical books was housed in the Library of the Surgeon General's Office. The author C. E. Louis Mayer (1829-1890) was a noted German gynecologist. He was the son of the gynecologist Karl Wilhelm Mayer (1795â"1868) and a brother-in-law of the renowned pathologist Rudolf Virchow -- considered by most authorities to have been the "father of modern pathology." After his studies from 1848 at the University in Halle, Meyer moved to Würzburg, where he worked under the direction of his brother-in-law Rudolf Virchow. Meyer went from Wurzburg to Vienna, where he conducted gynecological examinations of pregnant women at the birth center to publish his dissertation on this topic in 1853. Soon after, he took over his father's gynecological polyclinic. He received his habilitation at the University of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Berlin in 1872. He was a member of the Obstetric Society and took over the chairmanship of the association after the death of Eduard Arnold Martin. He remained in this position until the merger of the association with the Berlin Gynecological Society.…
