Four page glowing introduction by Conan Doyle: "I can say for him what he would be the last to say for himself, that a more gallant and chivalrous gentleman never stepped". All illustrations called for are present including the fold-out map.

Also a Sherlock Holmes story in the December issue entitled "The Adventure of The Dying Detective" with illustrations by Walter Paget, and an article by Commander Evans about Captain Oates illustrated with photos. Also writings by E Nesbit,Talbot Mundy, W W Jacobs and Baden Powell.The book is slightly rubbed to corners, edges and spine ends. Overall a very good copy, externally very sound, quite clean with bright gilt.Cloth not much worn at all. Inside hinges very sound with endpapers intact, making for a sound and solid binding, some offsetting to the endpapers,otherwise the pages are all quite clean and in good order throughout.

An important volume of the Strand Magazine, including this famous Sherlock Holmes short story, which did not appear in a book-form edition for a further four years (His Last Bow, 1917). Also contains excerpts from Captain Scott's diaries, which later appeared in full in 'Scott's Last Expedition' (1913), an early contribution from Wodehouse, and numerous short pieces by various authors.
