Añadir al carritoFirst edition, in 3 volumes, 318, 320 and 308 pages respectively, with a 12-page publisher's catalogue to the rear of the third volume. With an ink inscription: "From the publisher" to the title page of volume 1, indicating that this was a complimentary copy, probably issued for review prior to publication. The books are firmly and squarely bound in the original red cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt and black, all three have been recently sympathetically conserved, re-cased with the spines re-lined and some repairs to the cloth, 5 of the 6 endpapers are original, vol 2 has a new front endpaper of similar colour and stock, and the gutters have been neatly repaired. The boards are slightly marked and rubbed and the spines are faded and age toned, volume 1 had a chip to the cloth at the top of the spine with some loss of text, this has been repaired but with no attempt at replacing the lettering so that the repair can clearly be seen. The text blocks are uniformly age toned, slightly foxed and marked, with a few dog-eared page corners. Volume 1 has a faint ink scuff to page 104 and pages 249/250 and 251/252 have had their top corners torn off with no loss of text. Volume 3 has staining by a brown liquid to the tops of pages 232-237 and this seems to have caused the tops of pages 234 & 235 to stick together at some point, with a resulting small area of loss to the top of page 235/236 when they were separated, with neither loss or staining penetrating far enough to affect the text. Each volume has a slightly faded ink reference neatly written to the top outer corner of its front pastedown, "Oct 23", probably written by the publisher or the original recipient, and presumably indicative of the date of the publication, given that the book was published in October 1887. An excellent collection of Victorian weird and supernatural short stories, of particular interest for Arthur Conan Doyle enthusiasts as it contains some of his earliest appearances in print, six stories in total, one in volume two and five in the third volume.…
